Engine louder as it warms up - Holiday Rambler

HI, when i first crank my 2003 8.3 from cold, it is fairly quiet running, then in about 30 seconds its like something changes and the engine is louder and the cummins engine rattle is now loud and pronounced. dont know what the start up and warm up cycle is on an 8.3 that would cause this to occur. It it a warm up cycle thing going on? thx GRT

I think what you are hearing is the air compressor loading up? Does the noise quit after the air dryer spits and unloads? When you say cold start, how cold is it?

I had a 2000 that did the same thing. It was like the ecm changed the timing after 30 seconds. Someone else on this forum said theirs did the same so I quit worrying. It did change sounds slightly though. Unless you are standing next to the engine I don't think you would hear it.

Could also be the grid heater shutting of and you would get more rattle.
