Fuel and battery question

Hello all, doing some pm work on our coach, its a 1997 MADP4059. I've read about aftermarket lift pumps being installed to help prevent a CAPS pump failure, but I believe CAPS started in 1998, I have no idea if I should install one or not to help prevent pump failure, maybethats not an issueon the 97's? I have also read about pulling 2 fuses before disconnecting the battery cables, is that true on this old of a coach? Thanks in advance, scott.

From what I have read the CAPS install started in '98.
Never heard about pulling fuses before disconnecting the battery. Any reason given for that?

I saw this "pull the F10 and F11 fuses to protect the SCM" saw it more than once, never heard of it, just wanted to be safe. Sounds like it's on newer coaches.

Your coach has a mechanical C8•3 engine. No CAPS pump or electronics. Fuel pump is likely a Bosch P7100. A bulletproof engineering beauty!

If you have a 1997 Cummins you have a P-Pump system which is fully mechanical. You can tell b/c the pump looks like a mini inline 6 cylinder sitting on the top right (as you are facing the pulley assembly, belts, etc.). The CAPs has a rectangular box on top so it's easy to spot the difference.

The CAPS failures are major headaches due to the high chance of a misdiagnosis. Could be the pump, could be just a subcomponent of the pump, could be the ECM. Either way, you are stuck, need a tow, then wait for parts and service. 4 days and $12k later you are back on the road and want to plot revenge on cummins and the epa.

People with the CAPS tend to add the FASS fuel system to lower the likelyhood of a injector failure. The lift pump only pressurizes the system for 30 seconds and then the vacuum from the injection pump keeps the fuel moving i guess. The FASS is constant 14-18 PSI any time the engine is running. It is constantly sending excess fuel back to the tank thru a return line.

The Titanium or signature series...cant remember the exact name has it's own return line. the IND or semi series FASS uses the existing OEM injector return line. Be sure and know which one fits your engine/chassis. FASS will be able to tell you over email or phone. Dont assume that just bc you want your own return line you can simply add the titanium version.

I have heard of FASS systems going on P-Pump version but havent actually seen it.

I wanted the 1997 version of my coach (which i didnt get) specifically bc I wanted mechanical injection. When I was looking though some owners did complain about the old throttle systems from the time period....king electric maybe? Anyway, i think one owner told me he replaced his electric throttle with an air one for reliability.

I have a 1999 Spartan MM chassis. I've replaced the start and house batteries and never pulled a fuse. I just always followed the old sage advice, remove neg. first, replace neg. last.
Now one inverter states a specific battery cable removal sequence, but that is not the battery cables to the engine, only that inverter.

Well this all seems to be good news! We were getting worried, even tho we haven't had any problems. Pulled and flushed the radiator yesterday, there was a bunch of leafs/grass near the bottom between the rad and intercooler. Feels good knowing it's clean and replaced all the rubber components on cooling system as well. Thank you to everyone., much appreciated.
