Fuel Filter Wire?

What purpose is the wire that attaches to the bottom of the fuel filter on my 350 ISL?
Could it cause an engine shut down?

The wire is most likely for a " Water in fuel " sensor in the bottom of the filter.

It should not cause engine shut down , if disconnected or shorted .
