Fuel filters

Annual maintenance starts today on my DP. I've got 2 fuel filters, the primary which I will prefill with diesel fuel and the secondary which I will install dry. I need to have the engine fuel pump fill the secondary so how do I do that. Turn the key to the on position for a minute or 2 before starting??

I turn the key on and wait for the fuel pump to turn off(you can hear it), then turn key off. Cycle that about 6 times.

This is where my engine compartment remote start switch really comes in handy.

To prime, you will cycle the key ON for 30 seconds (first position/not engaging the starter) then off.

You will repeat this until you hear the RPM of the fuel pump when only runs for about 30 seconds then shuts itself off from high RPM (pumping air) to lower RPM (pumping fuel).

At that point, you can start the engine.

Yes, a lot easier to hear if you have someone else to cycle the key and you are behind the passenger's rear wheel of engine overhead hatch listening to the pump.
