Hydraulic Filter change....?? Cummins 350 ISL

I am at Speedco, getting service. They say they aren't allowed to change the hydraulic filter. I am not sure why, it looks like a simple change. I may try to do it myself, depending on the answers you guys give me.

It looks like an easy filter removal, HOWEVER, it looks like it's going to make a big mess when all the fluid drains out of the reservoir located next and above the filters.

I would appreciate your experiences and suggestions.Click image for larger version

It's just like an automotive oil filter, nothing to it. put a small pan under the filter when you remove it and find out what kind of hydraulic fluid it requires. I'd fill the filter with fresh fluid when replacing. Garber and a whole host of companies make the filter, including Cummins Fleetguard

My hydraulic filter "can" take three smaller filters. What I do is use a large trash bag and tape it under and around the area and have at it. The bag will catch the largest percentage of the oil, no problem.

normally, the filters for hyd systems are inside the reservoir. Not sure why that would be against speedco sop, but in your case, it does appear to be readily accessible. Make sure you release the pressure.

I changed ours two years ago, I removed the hose on the bottom and it ran into a drain pan, remove the clamp on the top and remove the lid, inside there are usually 2 or 3 filters stacked. Probably the easiest item to service in a coach. My local RV dealer had the filters in stock.

A lot of oil will run out while changing the filter. Spartan told me they remove dipstick and plug dipstick hole so that reservoir can't breath while changing filter. Lack of venting will slow the oil escaping down to a trickle. I have not tried this yet but will in the future.

This also might be a good time to go ahead and change the oil also. Also according to Spartan changing the fluid in the reservoir is all you can do, no way to actually get all the oil out of the rest of the system.

Here is some good bedtime reading regarding hydraulic system maintenance. Changing oil and filters just because is not only a waste of money but can do more harm than good. Taking an annual oil sample would be a better way to spend your money.

I also have a spin-on filter, but it's mounted higher than the reservoir.

Yes, removing the reservoir dipstick and plugging the dipstick hole with a solid rubber stopper works very well. I purchased the stopper at the local hardware store. After removing the filter, slowly removing the plug allows for a controlled oil flow while draining the system. After the system is drained, also open the top of the reservoir and replace the in-tank filter. That filter came from Spartan, the only place I could find it.

Is it just ATF fluid that goes back in?

You really need to look that up in your owners manual, or call Monaco customer support with your coach serial number, to get the answer to that.
At different times, and models, Monaco used 3 different fluids in the hyd system. AW46 Hydraulic fluid, ATF, or 15-40 engine oil.
