Is this an alternate oil fill location?
Hi All,
So I have a Cummins 425 ISL, and it has the typical oil fill location on top of the valve cover. I also have a cap on the top of the front gear cover... I have attached a pic of it. It sure would be handy for top offs if it can be used for that, rather than going into my closet...
Thanks!

I dont believe your belt is routed properly. I could be wrong but the belt should go under that idler pully not top as the belt is riding on the ribbed side?

If the pulley is smooth, UNDER.
If grooved, OVER.
I would also lean/bend the hose support so it is exactly perpendicular to the hose. Right now, it is not doing your hose any favors. Also, make sure the hose is not rubbing on the timing cover.

No, it's correct for a side rad coach!
The only pulley without grouves is the water pump.

As posted, yes you can add oil in the timing cover fill cap...
OP, is the idler belt pulley in your picture smooth or does it have grooves?
If I zoom in it sure looks smooth.

Thanks all, that will be handy if I need to add oil or after an oil change!
And yes, that pully is grooved! I'll also adjust that hose support.

Yes to jmfixitman, and yes to your observation. That sure looks like the A/C compressor the idler pulley is supposed to tension. Keen eyes!

I have the same engine in the same MH. Your belt is routed correctly. The only idler on the engine is lower down near the air filter.
If your A/C compressor ever goes bad on a trip, you can bypass it with a shorter belt using that grooved pulley with a 8 ribbed 66.5 inch belt.

You have fitted this short bypass belt?
I should be carrying one.

Yes, was on a trip when the a/c compressor decided to throw a bearing. Snapped the belt. Used the broken belt to measure the length needed to bypass the compressor. Bought one at Napa (nice to have a toad to run for parts) and was back on the road in under an hour for less than $50.
Side note: Called the roadside assistance plan when first stopped. Since it was a Sunday, the tow company would only be able to haul it to a shop to wait for a mechanic on Monday. The tow company would be 5-6 hours to respond with a landall.

Thanks !
I was kicking myself for not getting this measurement when I replaced the belt and tensioner.
