ISL 450 - What is Too Few Miles?

We are looking at buying a 2016 motorhome that has only 6,000 miles on it. The seller bought the coach new and has kept it inside a climate controlled building since new and the coach looks essentially brand new. Our concerns are the engine and chassis. We plan to take the coach to a Cummins dealer (that is also a Spartan service center) and have them assess it by hooking it up to the insight software and also do a visual check of the engine and chassis. Can the techs reasonably tell the condition and potential future problems/issues? What else can we do to check out the engine, chassis, and the coach? Fluid tests? Others?

(We have owned other DP's and feel fine with running, testing, and assessing the house components. It is the chassis and engine we are not able to assess ourselves.)

Do the fluid test. It’s possible it has the original oil in it with that low of miles. Unfortunately, it will only tell so much as generally multiple fluid samples are needed to get a trend, but at least you should be able to spot something major.

I wouldn't be afraid of it even with all original fluids.

Obviously not a bargain, as is unit, so the dealer lookup will be invaluable. The biggest problems would be emissions or electrical hiccups. As far as I know, the ECM records lots of relevant operating history, so it should show if this unit has been problematic, like throwing codes and derating. I may be wrong, that might not have been available in '16, but they'll be able to tell you exactly what it willl show. They WILL NOT be able to predict future issues, unless the oil, ATF, or coolant comes back bad, and highly doubt that even if it is original.

The general emissions problems were worst 2005-2015, so hopefully this one is relatively trouble free for you, that is, a couple of recalls or software updates to get straightened out, not a couple a year, or more. Make sure they do all the updates also, as far as I know, this is not like the Dodge pickups where the updates are not desirable.

Ask the dealer to make you a copy of the ECM

When I bought my coach I no maintenance records, it was a repo and seller was selling it as is. I did my own inspection and found no problems or indications of anything wrong so we bought the coach.

First thing I did was take it a Cummins shop for a complete inspection and service. I knew the shop manager and he took care of me. In the end he said the rig was "Cherry" and I got a heck of a deal. He also made sure I got a copy of the ECM on a CD.

The ECM does have what is called an ABUSE record showing how many times it ran out of spec. ie low oil pressure, high temps, high rpm etc. At the time it showed no problems and no stored codes. Pretty much a clean bill of health.

Too Few Miles

I would not be afraid of low miles . I bought a 2004 Monaco with 5600 miles on it. Yes I did put all new belts ,hoses and tires on it ...changed the the engine and trans oil and added AT 205 to the Trans, Engine and Hydraulic oil to fix some very minor oil drips.
I would search this forum for any issues specific to your rig... the best money you can spend is on a part before it breaks!
