Just wondering why Cummings Painted some of their ISL's Black and some Red? Been wondering why? Everyone that i know and I have asked that question doesn't know either? If anyone can answer this question the information would be appreciated

Frank.

Are there any new ones that are black? I know of some older engines that were black. I just assumed that at at certain time Cummins just decided to change color to red.
If new engines are coming out in both colors, perhaps the red is used in motorhomes, and black is for other applications?
Short answer is, I'm not sure either.[emoji2]

Engines built after 1/2007 required the DPF System
Black eninges prior to 2007
Red engines after 2007

My ISC is red, as I understand it, because it came out of a fire engine (so it also has a stonking great air compressor that airs it up in no time at all). Apparently they painted them different colours depending on the intended use.
This may just be the European Market, however.

The last two didgets on your engine block serial # will determihe if yours was manufactured for fire truck spec's.

I'm not sure there's any rhyme or reason to it really. I think at one point they just plain changed the color of the engines.
The vehicles you find one color or the other may be random for a certain same year or years time period, due to using up the black engines already built, mixed with newly built identical red ones.

Early on, Cummins only had enough red paint to paint the valve cover. When profits went up, they could afford enough red paint to paint the entire engine

Well that would make since because mine is a 2007 ISL and the engine is Black. I was just curious as i saw some ISL's were Red and some were Black. Good point. Thanks for the feed back.

Sounds like you have a 06' pre DPF engine.

Our 08' coach has a red, 07' built engine.
