ISL Vibration Damper
Going through my maintenance checklist and I'm stumped on one item. I have a 2 year inspection jtem flagged for "Inspect Vibration Damper". I have no idea what it looks like and where I need to be looking.

Its the engine crankshaft pully.
Some are 2 piece and tend to come apart and some are silicone filled that can leak.
In either case, Its an important piece of the engine balance.

Not to steal the post...but just how do you inspect an engine damper? I got one, no fluid noticed around it or identifiable wobble when engine idles. So is my inspection complete?
Thx

Thanks for the article. However, after reading the article still a bit confused on inspection procedure. I identified 3 inspection points in the article, wobble, protrusion of a rubber ring, and alignment of an inscribed line (not more than a 1/16 off). Other than wobble not sure what else I can check on our ISC/ISL cummins. The rubber ring would be out of our visual range (inside toward engine). Guess I could try some kind of mirror to inspect? I will check for an inscribed line, but since the cover is on the front of our engine any alignment would have to be on the backside toward the engine. So maybe a mirror again???

Isn't your Alternator and serpentine belt at the rear of your coach ?
In front of your rear bumper ?
If you have a rear radiator?
Its in front of the Radiators
And why a Side radiator is a nice option.

I have a side radiator. I see the damber just like the picture above with the damper cover easily visible to the rear of the engine (ISL engine). I will to look more closely next time I am in there to see if I can inspect the backside (between engine and damper). Uncertain if looking at the visible cover will show me anything except wobble if running.

The dampner has a fluid inside, it should be inspected for any dents, wet area where fluid leaking/dirt caked on.
Any loose or missing bolts.
I've seen a few fail, engine vibration to the point of tossing off the belts. But the driver can feel vibration in a semi truck. In a motorcoach application, driver may not be able to feel the vibration.

I have never seen one fail but then again I was only in the game about 12 years. Do heavy diesels come OEM with fluid dampers? I just assumed most came with inertia ring dampers like most OEM cars and trucks.

In my opinion, Yes
Seldom do they fail.
We have never had one fail.
Drive and enjoy.

Damper failure is rare. Depending on engine application, damper damage is possible. I've seen where something hit the dampner in something like a concrete, log or refuse truck, dent the dampner and cause failure.
There's the inspection!
