ISM M11 starting problems
My Cummins 2002 ISM, M11Engine been turning over more than 8-10 seconds before starting. I changed the original starter, for the newer faster turning starter. Still same thing. I changed the old Parker Racor water fuel filter to the Davco 382. And now it starts up within 3 seconds. After a few months starting to take up 8-10 seconds again. I added a Silver Leaf for the gauges. I did a diagnostics off the Silver Leaf after starting the motorhome and got this.
ENG SPN 627 2 injector power
ENG SID 251 2 Power Supply
After talking with Mark Overholser with Silver Leaf this is what he came up with.
SPN 627 2 and SID 251 2 seem to have a common entry.
"Supply voltage to the ECM fell below 6.0 volts for a fraction of a
second... OR the ECM was not allowed to power down correctly (retain
battery voltage for 30 seconds after key)"
The effect is, "Possible no noticeable performance effects...
OR...engine dying or hard starting. Fault information, trip information,
maintenance monitor data, trending data, and user activated datalogger
data may be inaccurate"
This is Cummins Code, "434 Yellow"
There is also a second entry:
SAE Code PID 251 2, in the Cummins Documentation says, "Power to the
real time clock has been interrupted and its setting is no longer valid".
The effect is, "Time Stamp in the ECM power down data will be incorrect"
This is Cummins Code, "319 Maint"
And gave me this commit
Based on my Few Years Experience, I would guess you have a Loose
Connector, or possibly a Bad Ground some place. Even Oxide Build up on
the Terminals on the Battery could be the cause..
The Process of Starting the Coach causes the Voltage Drop... The
Starter PULLS a lot of Amperage when Cranking, if it is starting to
fail, it Might Pull the Battery Voltage down to a point that the Codes
are Generated, but recovers quickly enough that the ECM still does its job..
Any suggestions on what to do. Besides cleaning all the grounds and battery terminals. I’m sure there are some grounds and other connections, somewhere I don’t know about. Can I after disconnecting the batteries, Remove the plug connections on the ECM. Clean and spray with a contact cleaner (like DeoxIT D5) on them without doing any damage or cause a problem after I have the batteries disconnected to the ECM?
Any other suggestion would be appreciated.
