I've heard from my trucking friends that the 650 had many issues with the 650hp engine. Not so much with the 600. My thoughts are that the power output was pushed beyond the capabilities of engine.

You should be fine with your 450.

Saw your pictures and I’m impressed! Fantastic work, and you did it yourself. Luckily it happened at home and you have a good sized shop to work in. Keep up the good work & God bless!

WOW! There is some incredible mechanical tallent by the OP

I'm curious - is this a Non-Def engine? I'm just wondering if the head issue is directly rated with all the EGR stuff, or not. We're looking at a 2012 coach, but it has a 2011 Non-def ISX engine...I'm wondering if we're vulnerable for this or no.

I believe his coach is a 2011, but I am not sure if it is has the regen system or DEF emissions setup. Anything built in 2008 or latter will have an emission system of some sort on the exhaust. The DEF system is the latest setup and much less troublesome that the regen system from my experience. Both are a pain at times. My best guess is if you are looking at a 2012 without the DEF and his is a 2011 you have the same engine.

I would say yes, the coach you are looking at has this same issue. Buyer beware.

For 650 hp ISX owners, 34000 mi. 2010 engine in a 2011 chassis. Replaced head with complete new head assy. as a preemptive strike. As one can see the valves were already starting to pit. The intake track and valves were pretty dirty for only 34000 mi. Been back together for about 15000 mi. No problems at all.

Now that’s the way to head off this ugly problem. Good for you, now you can enjoy your coach without the thought of a major engine failure far away from home.[emoji1303][emoji846]

I'm waiting on a quote from Cummins/Downey as we got the engine serial number and it's an ISM871 - the one prone to this issue. The tech wasn't familiar at all with the issue, which has me concerned. After another member (Mr. D?) went through it once, but didn't get the upgraded head...having to do it a second time (I can't even imagine!), I want to make sure we replace with all the proper parts.

So does anyone have the "latest/ most corrected" part numbers that need to be replaced? I'm assuming the head comes with new valves. Do the pistons also need to be replaced (I remember references of new scrapers) - and if they do need replacing, do you also replace wrist pins and shafts? Where do you stop?

(I'll share quote when I get it!)

To my knowledge, this coach is running fine and currently has 93k miles - which I think helps alleviate the situation?

Also, are you able to completely remove the EGR system, or do you have to keep it on? (Since it seems to be the primary contributor)?

Typo? ISX is the problem engine, not ISM
