I am encouraged by their up-front communication with you acknowledging a potential systemic problem. I suspect if you keep it polite, you will get good results. I had a similar problem with Freightliner with a coach months out of warranty and they made good.

We are too!
No reason to get mad at them, they didn't do it on purpose and they have helped in previous cases with other owners with the same problem with the ISX's.

Estimate just came in today: $28,879.32!!

So it cost us over $9 a mile to drive 3,000 miles.

Cummins NW is not even going to ask Cummins to participate in the repair cost either.

I really feel sorry for your situation. That is incredible.

Well, they did say that it would be fixed will the new parts that Cummins came out with due to all the failures and would carry the "normal" 1 yr/100,000 mile warranty! This second failure came at 25,000 miles but fours years later and one year out of the 5 yr warranty.

Big whoop!

Sorry to hear Cummins is not standing behind the faulty issue.

Any chance of contacting Cummins head office directly? A suggestion is to write the President or CEO of the company directly.

Is there or should there be a class action suit for the defect?

I have contacted Cummins and the consignment dealer is also going to contact them through their contacts.
Haven't seen anything about a class action as the market for the 650 Hp unit is small although there are a number of comments from truckers with cam problems. Seems like it's mostly the high HP engines that have had the problems. My contact at Cummins has admitted there are known problems just like mine and they have new heads and valves to cure the problem.

Actually it is worse than when they say it. I would much rather here the I told you so rather than the profound silence on the subject.

Mr. D. So sorry for you. We too have a million mile motor in our coach. It is a 60 series Detroit Diesel. Not a bit of problem so far. But at 43,000 miles it is really just now getting broken in. I think, no I know, nobody will step up to the plate if something fails. Detroit Diesel has been sold twice. Once to Roger Penske, and then to Mercedes. Now nobody even mentions DD.

With regards to your situation; Cummins has a lot to lose if truckers hear too much bad about their current "top of the line" engine. Here is a thought. Find out if any very large fleets are currently using this engine. If so they most probably are having the same problem in several,of their trucks. Or perhaps even a large bus company. I can't believe that Cummins won't at least pony up half of the cost. Look at it this way; Cummins marks up the cost to by at least 65%. The Cummins NW marks up their labor cost by at least 300%. So both have room to be br magnanimous. Good luck.

Did a little internet checking and found that Cummins Northwest alone has had four valve failures on ISX engines. Two were in motor homes and two were on over the road trucks. Go get em.

Yep, that probably came from one of my other posts since that's what the tech told me on the phone and ours is one of the MH's reported.

Is this the same Cummins shop that worked on it the first time?

No,
The first dropped valve "fix" was at Cummins Southern Plains in Amarillo TX. at 19,082 miles. They also replaced the turbo at the same time.

The second turbo replacement was at Cummins Crosspoint in Nashville at 20,386 miles.

And our repair estimate has another turbo replacement in it too.
