I've said enough on this subject so I'm going to let the dust settle and see what Cummins has to say.

Mr D
A little more research found that the original ISX engine came with dual overhead cams. One cam operated both the intake and exhaust valves and the other cam operated the fuel injectors.
Then for some reason they changed the valve arrangement and used one cam for everything. Do you know which type you have? Wonder why they changed?

I just found what you're referring to. Seems the change was in 2010 and ours was earlier than that so it's the dual OHC that started in 2007.

Your wife must be an angel if you have not heard the "I told you so" phrase that we all love. Hopefully she feels your pain and does't want to rub salt in the wounds. You have a fantastic coach ( I looked at a Magna) and, I think, what should be a fantastic power train. Get your ducks in a row, you may have to appeal directly to Cummins if Cummins NW won't back you up.

Good luck.

All with a Cummins engine watching this thread are looking to see if Cummins is the quality company they would like to be.

Now the problem is: Diesel prices have risen in the last two weeks so it's going to cost more to fill the tank (kind of a minor thing compared to the cost of fixing it but still an extra cost). My camping season is just starting and the MH sits at Cummins while I make payments on it. Need to do the brakes on both our Honda's and guess where the tools/jacks etc are that I need to do them? Want to finish organizing cupboards etc and buy bins and need the measurements plus there's a lot of stuff to sort out and get rid of both in the MH and here at home.
NONE of which I can do while we wait for a decision and repairs to be made.

I was just in my truck service shop & they had an ISX top end torn down. Very beefy and impressive. It's hard to believe that those things can break.

Apparently the valves get too hot and break in the 650 HP engine, that's why the new head and valve design/materials. BTW, which ISX was it? There is the 2007 dual overhead cam like ours, then in 2010 they came out with a single overhead cam. I think the 2010 model doesn't have the problem.

I don't know what year it was, but it had a cam for the valves and a second cam for the fuel injectors.

Larry, that would be what Cummins calls the 2007 model and is what we have. The 2010 model had only a single cam.

Mr_D,

Are you stating that Cummins is replacing all of the components to convert the engine from a Dual OH Cam engine to a Single OH Cam engine?

If not, then I would dump the coach otherwise it WILL happen again, most likely when it is OUT of warranty.

No, they have a new head and valves out that's supposed to permanently cure the problem.
Can't dump the coach, put all our available cash we had into buying it as it is.
Cummins called yesterday, said it'll be buttoned up Friday but needs to be run on the dyno for break in and testing and they can't do that till at least Monday.
They also found the DPF is cracked inside so have to add an add'l $2,000 to the already $29,000 bill! Had to cash out my only IRA to pay for it which left me $1,000 short of the needed $19,000, now I'm $3,000 short!
Was planning fully retiring in a month or so, guess I need to keep working for another year or two now!

Ouch :( sorry to hear about the extra expenses. I truly hope you get up and running soon. Our coach started throwing Check Engine Lights yesterday while using the Jake Brake. Turn off the Jake brake, light goes off. This is not fun when you are on a 7 mile long (according to the signs) 6% down grade. Service brakes were a little hot at the end!
