Newbie to Diesel Engines
I am a newbie to class A motorhomes and the diesel engine. What is the proper oil to run in my Cummins C8.3. Thank you,

For the CORRECT answer to any question about your particular Cummins engine call Cummins Care at 1-800-DIESELS™ (1-800-343-7357), with your engine number.
Far too many forum answers are simply "opinions" and/or "guesses", (and are often WRONG)!
IMO, nobody knows your Cummins engine like Cummins.

Mel S is correct of course.
I would be very surprised if most Cummins owners here are not using a 15W40 such as Rotella T. Look for the CJ 4 spec on the label.

Well you see, what u need, is some of that their Emsoil. BUT, to be safe and up on current trends, you'll want to add some Purple dye, to make it look pretty while be thrashed around at a few thousand RPM. Then, let's not forget to add mollie something or other to this blend, as the guys that made your oil, that you added Purple dye to, had no clue - only the secret adding of additives will set this oil protection free...
Or, come to think of it - calling Cummins is a great idea...
Now, let's talk Chevy vs Ford...
The Cummins call, is the way to go. And, IMO, buy good quality filters.
Best, and enjoy your ride.

For the year of your Coach you need to use a good 15/40 IE: Rotella/Lucas Ect. would be fine - never mind the the other BS.

While my post was mostly BS ! Do get a good quality filter, appropriate for your engine. And Cummins will tell you the current recommended filter number for your engine, as they do change over the years. (They might also, have a non BS opinion on the appropriate grade of oil too !) That being said, I too suspect what others have posted, 15W40 CJ 4 Spec, will be what they say...
Best,
Smitty

My Gillig Bus Chassis Manual for the installed C8.3L Cummins engine indicates 15w-40 oil.

What he said
FleetGuard are go to go filters. Used them in the fleet for years with never a problem. JMHO

Just "guessing" here but since Cummins owns both Fleetgard and Valoline--I am going to guess they recommend--wait for it---shoot, you already guessed.....
