Spare fuel filters
So, your on the road & you suddenly need to change out your fuel filters due to bad fuel. How do you pre fill the filters before installing? I just bought my spares & started to think about the source of fuel for the filters, if needing changing on the road. I have an ISL 350HP side radiator.
Thanks for any info.

On my ISC I cycle the key off & on 4-5 times & the lift pump fills the filters.

That is the nice part about an ISL, it does not need to be pre-filled. There is a section in the owners manual on changing the fuel filter and sewmun is correct. Leave the key on for 30 seconds at a time before trying to start it. If it doesn't start, repeat the steps again until the air is bled off.

Except an ISL and an ISC are Cummins and pumping is not required.

The dreaded 2 filter deal. My filter mounted on the engine will fill itself. The primary ( closest to the tank) will partially fill, from gravity I guess.
This may be overkill but I carry a small can of diesel to fill the filter and a drain pan to catch what comes from the old filter that is replaced. What to do with the contents of a filter can be a problem.
The days of dumping fuel at the side of the road or in a rest stop parking lot may be gone or at least leaving.
Asking my wife to hold a garbage bag with a filter full of fuel as we go down the road, never seemed like a good thought either.

Ok, just a question, friend of mine has 2008 with 300hp Cummings, not sure of ISC Isl, now the filter that got him stranded was on the frame? He has the water seperator in the back and a filter on the engine, I know cars and trucks with gas motors have a fuel filter on the frame, but never heard of a motor home filter on the frame
Thanks

The CUMMINS (no G) depends on the motorhome mfg. if second fuel filter is installed. Most Monaco's will...

Like hillboy, I carry enough fuel in a small fuel can to prefill my two filters. I also carry a boat funnel/filter that provides an additional filter for that fuel as I'm putting it in the new filters. Although I have an ISL, I've found this method works better than turning the key on and off a half dozen times.

Freightliner installs a Racor 20 micron 'inline filter' inside the passenger side frame rail just aft of the tires. You need six foot long arms and vise grip fingers to change it from underneath. I was unable to get to mine while working from a flat floor so I took it to a nearby Freightliner dealership where the tech was able to change it easily while standing on a ladder in a maintenance pit.

Manual for my ISC clearly says "Do NOT pre-fll fuel filter, and gives procedure to purge air by turning key on and off. Last time I changed one (only one on mine) on the road, after priming it died after running a few seconds. Did it again, twice for good measure, and it ran fine then. I put the used filter upright in my wash bucket until I could dispose of it. I have used the priming procedure after having it changed by mobile service guys too.
