Thermostat Replacement
While on I-59 in Mississippi yesterday my ISB 340hp it started heating up, pulled off on shoulder let it sit for 5 minutes and at 50 MPH I could keep it below 210*. The nearest diesel shop was 35 miles away, they replaced thermo. and $779.00 later we were on the road again.

Glad you got it fixed before any damage was done. Did the shop say the thermostat was faulty? Just curious! I'm assuming all is well now and temps are normal again?

they could not tell by looking at it, but the temp. is normal now. 192/194

Good deal, glad it's back to normal now. Mine is getting close to needing changed. I'm not really looking forward to it, but rather do it at home than on the side of the road. Or worse yet, paying a high $$ shop in the middle of nowhere!!

To check a Bi-metal water thermostat. Put in pan of water with thermometer and heat up water. Provides temp as to start to open and fully open by temp. I do that test on a brand new one before installing.

My daughter just paid $855 to replace a radiator cooling fan motor on a Nissan Versa. These newer cars are not designed and engineered for ease of access for maintenance. .5 MH to replace fan and 3.5 MH to get to it.
Though troubleshooting is better with computer monitor.

I dont like it.
Truckers and contractors dont like it.
Students can't keep a vehicle running with out dads help at times.
We want to be FREE???
And play RV life style.
We Pay more

Yep, it wasn't the easiest place to replace but if I was at home I would have changed it out myself. Thermostat alone was $119.00

I bought mine and replaced it too. It only cost 18 bucks. I think you got ripped off

FYI...I just got a quote from my local CAT dealer for replacing thermostats (they call them water regulators) on my engine. Total of 5 parts are listed for a cost of $81.11. Labor is 2.5 hours for $275.00. They also added a miscellaneous charge of $200 making the out the door price $556.11. Not sure what the additional 200 is for. I expect it is a standard RV up charge.
I picked up the parts Friday and will attempt the repair myself.

The cummins thermostat listed for $89.00 I did see that on invoice. The shop said they had to travel to pick it up so I guess that was in the price also. When you are on the road you don't have much choice.
I guess if you want to play, you have to pay..

Changed the thermostat on my ISL400 myself....$67 at the local NAPA store and two hours of my labor.

I'm guessing your coach has a rear radiator, so they had to access it from above?
