Unknown clicking

I have a 2011 Ram 2500 with the 6.7L diesel that has a mysterious clicking coming from what seems to be the right (passenger) side of the engine. It doesn't get louder with acceleration but it gets quicker, in time with the engine. The truck seems to be running fine and the clicking has been there for about 5k miles. I took it to a diesel shop and the tech pointed to a spot that he said was an exhaust leak (see attached photos), pointing out that there was black soot on it. He said this is where the clicking came from and to fix it would mean replacing the EGR to the tune of about $1,500. I'm no mechanic but I can be pretty handy with small tools and I wanted to see if anyone here could give me some advice. Is this something I could do?

I don't buy that $1500 for an ERG replacement is typical for most shops. I'd find a different shop quickly. Check your area on RVServiceReviews.com for other shops.

FYI, one thing that causes a ticking that follows RPM is a serpentine belt failing...one or more of the nylon strands breaks and pulls loose and is hanging free, then slaps against a fixed part of the engine in sync with RPM. So check that too.

Not saying it's NOT the ERG but I'd sure check with a different shop first.

Thanks

Would you know what part I am pointing to? I think it's the EGR cooler.

I believe that is the exhaust brake you are pointing to.

FYI....
Exhaust brake is part of the Turbo.
It is a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT)
Sliding Nozzle Ring controls the turbo speed

I would highly suggest joining a ram cummins forum, the one i am on is free. Cummins forum. Lots of people know a lot about the trucks and motors. One could record, the sound, and upload it and odds are someone has had that problem and knows what it is, and the fix.
The motor part, that has the electric type plug on the top, sits on top of the egr cooler, the part were the cables go to, is the egr, it lets exaust go to the intake.
A quick old fashion white glove test when the motor is cold, will tell if it is leaking there. the old long screwdriver,,, pointy part to the finger area, and put to ear, will help with the ticking sound.
Using gunk engine clean after the white glove test, if it is dirty, will help find the area better after a little run time.
The cummins is much easier and cheaper to replace and work on. A friend with a 2015 duramax just had to have his egr valve replaced, hole setup, took over a week to get part, and over $2,500 out the door.
My cummins is a 2015.
Best of luck.
