Report also said that the high potassium and sodium could be antifreeze... but I think it's probably road salt. I think this tear in the boot was present during our winter trip to Florida during Christmas.

This is such a bummer.

I smiled when I read "Joe's turbo setup blows through a Spearco intercooler and creates 110 psi of boost down the dragstrip." That's way cool.

We're still not sure how to proceed here... Leaving this in the hands of the man upstairs.

I would do like D Lindy said. Put your exhaust back to stock.

Dropped Oil Pan

I went ahead and dropped the oil pan tonight. All the cylinder bores looked to be in good shape except cylinder #1. It has a fair amount of vertical lines in it, but I was able to get my hand up in there to feel, and they don't really have any depth to them.

It seems like there's more than one thing going on here... I'm guessing cylinder 1 had an oil ring failure... and while the engine has certainly been ingesting dust, it's possible that the dusting did less damage than I had anticipated. This would explain why the slobber tube isn't just oozing blow-by... compression is still good... and if an oil ring let go... there's my quart of oil every 200 miles.

Maybe it really is possible to just hone the cylinders out, put new pistons, rings and bottom end bearings in in-frame and get down the road. Oh and a new turbo impeller...

I dunno... pulling the head will tell the true tale. Now that I know there's a chance this could all be done in-frame with minimal cost for machining, I might just get the ambition to pull the head. We'll see. Still a big job... and I'm still worn out from wrenching on this old thing.

-cheers

Been watching and reading this thread as my old 8.3 C has developed blow-by and consumes about 2 qts every 1000 miles- there aren't any leaks or drips.
Been thinking about an in chassis rebuild to freshen it up.
Sounds like you haven't confirmed the extent of any damage except cylinder #1, keep us posted on your progress.

FWIW, Bridgeway, local Cummins runs specials on rebuild kits now and then. Currently it is The ISX on special. A call to the local Cummins dealer might turn something up. A sale item with your Power club card might save some $$$.

How stupid of me.
We always used hours on heavy equipment. So my brain defaulted.

Well, Piker, now you have an idea which direction to head with this. You may be able to hone #1 and freshen the rest up for a good engine again. Keep us informed.
