What's the deal with Cummins/Fleetguard LF3970?

Need oil filter for my first change quickly.
Cummins B6.7 uses Cummins/Fleetguard LF3907 filter.
Cant find the real deal locally online searching.
Several mail-order places showing out of stock.
Will check physically with my local Freightliner dealer tomorrow.

I have searched for some in the cross reference.

Napa and Oriellys locally have other brand subs on the cross reference- one in stock, one 2 days available:
Baldwin B7177
WIX 57182

This is a common filter. Whats the deal with the LF3907? Part of the supply chain problems or just me? If so, what is everyone using to substitute that is generally available and good quality?

Back ordered almost everywhere. I had to drive an hour to a distant freightliner dealer to get one of the 4 they had in stock.

Baldin and Wix are both good filters.

Error: "3907" in original post should be "3970"

Error: everywhere I said "3907" in original post should be "3970"

I bought filters at Freightliner a couple of weeks ago, they recommended a Donaldson filter.

I realize that debating oil filters can be contentious as each person has their own opinions. I'll just throw out "my opinion" and I know many will disagree but this is the dynamic of online forums like this one.

What about NAPA's own brand? In the past, I've purchased NAPA Gold filters as they are made by WIX on the exact same assembly line. There may be very minor differences but not enough to make a big difference in my opinion.

You local NAPA store should have them in stock. The part cross-reference to the Fleetguard LF3970 should be FIL 7182

NAPA Gold Oil Filter FIL7182, $24.88

They are in stock at Roberta, Reynolds, Barnesville, Jackson ...or check your local store if you are in a different part of GA.

I do see the Fleetguard in stock through Amazon, however, from doxa-worldwide:

original poster here with an update:

Stopped at the new Freightliner service center near Byron GA. Parts guy said those filters are backordered. I asked him if there is a substitute. He typed on the computer for a minute and said NO. I asked what people are doing for oil changes and he said things are crazy right now.

I wonder what the service dept are telling people who need an oil change.

So I picked up the last WIX 57182 they had at my local Orielly auto parts.

I rounded up a filter so now to chase oil.

It's either get it locally and change it tomorrow or wait until after this next trip of about 1800 miles.

I will be using full synthetic 15W40.

While at oriellys I also looked at thier oil shelf. No full synthetic diesel oil in stock. So came home and looked online at Rotella T6, Mobil Delvac Extreme, and Amsoil Signature Series pricing and availability.

What a pain.

T6 seems to be available at $30 a gallon (Auto Zone nearby). But I can get Amsoil signature series with free shipping for $37 a gallon (and a membership which I do every couple of years anyway). Walmart is mostly out of Delvac Extreme everywhere for 19.47/gal which would be a good deal, but one store 15 miles away says "limited stock." Strangely, an independent walmart supplier will also ship Delvac Extreme it but their price is $33.10 plus shipping I presume.

I don't want to drive 30miles to find walmart has less than 4-5 gallons on the shelf. And if I go to Autozone it might be the same deal: not enough on the shelf.

Amazon doesn't have T6 in the correct weight and has no Delvac Extreme.

I may give up and change it at 7000 miles with Amsoil in December. Sigh.

Same here. I use Rotella T6 15W-40. My last oil change (two years ago) I got 10 gallons for $24/gal. This time it's running $30+/gal.

I ordered 10 gallons from AutoZone on-line. A little while later I got an e-mail saying my order was cancelled, they could not fill it. Then I tried Advanced Auto Parts (they were next cheapest at $31.99/gal. I tried to order on line, but site said I had to call store to order. Then store says I have to come in to order. Geeze. So I go in an order. The guy says they are getting it from multiple locations so it will take a day or two (no one has much in stock). At least I was able to get it.

With tax and filter, that's $400 for a DIY oil change. These big rigs ain't cheep to own.

Funny, as I was just going through the same dilemma here. I finally called Cummins ad asked about an interchangeable filter for the 3907, and was told there is no filter listed as an option. Guess the reason is that Fleetguard had a proprietary filtration using Stratopore. Yes, Wix, Napa, Baldwin, Donaldson all have filters that will fit the ISB 6.7, but the only difference will / may be level of filtration. Prices I am seeing on the 3970 are starting to get pretty high from where they were 2 months ago, so I just may wait as my rig isn't going anywhere for the next 4 or 5 months. Maybe that cargo container of filter will show up by then.

Always remember when they refer to the chain of supply, that the last link in that chain is in China.
