The Wikipedia article is excellent. I have toured the ISB plant in Columbus, In and it is one of the most modern and efficient factories anywhere. Cummins had to modernize because in the 80's the Japanese made a major effort to take over diesel engine manufacturing. Cummins adopted many of the modern manufacturing methods used by the Japanese and went on to lead in sales. As diverse as the locations of the engine manufacturing plants are, the parts and subsystems are even more diverse and mostly owned by companies other than Cummins. During WWII Cummins was passed over for most of the war manufacturing because they were classified as engine assemblers and not manufacturers. Their business plan seems to work.
