2005 Cat C9 400hp a good engine?

Looking to buy a MH with the 2005 Cat C9 400hp engine that has 77k on it. It appears to have been serviced regularly and maintained well. What should I be looking to do to continue having good service? Any areas to be serviced approaching 100k miles?

I had a C9 in my '05 Dutch Star. I put in almost 50,000 miles on it with no problems other then a broken serpentine belt. It was a great engine.

The CAT C9 motors of that vintage are excellent motors. They do have a couple of minor issues that you should be aware of. The high pressure bypass on the oil pump proved to be a little inadequate at cold temperatures. If you notice high oil pressure at startup, let it warm up a little before driving. (Many C9 owners have switched to synthetic oil that flows better at cold temperatures.) CAT redesigned the oil pump in later years and if this becomes an issue, the later designed pump can be installed.

The other minor issue is a fuel flow consideration. The C9 has a mechanical fuel pump. CAT specifications require that the engine be installed within 10 feet of the fuel tank or have an auxiliary fuel pump installed. Most RV manufacturers ignored this and installed the fuel tank all the way in the front with no additional way to provide an adequate fuel supply. The solution is to provide an electric supplemental fuel pump into the system. RV manufacturers chose not to do this for cost saving issues. You will recognize that you need this if you experience low rpm stumbling upon acceleration.

Both of these are minor issues and may not at all affect the individual motorhome you are looking at. But keep these things in mind.

It reassuring to hear the C9 is a good engine and the two points mentioned will be watched closely and correct action taken should they become an issue. Again, thanks for the feedback.

I should also mention that since the C9 is a HEUI engine that uses engine oil as hydraulic fluid to fire the injectors, keeping clean oil in it is critical. CAT is also the only manufacturer that guarantees their oil filters will filter down to 2 microns, so it is best to use their high efficiency oil filters in any HEUI motor. They are no more expensive than other good filters, so for me it is a no-brainer. Just my 2 cents.

Appreciate the C9 knowledge and suggestions and I do agree about quality filters and oil being used. Unfortunately the MH was sold before I could negotiate a purchase. Looked to be a good one too.
