Aero 5050XL, how to tell if it's mounted backwards?

Gents,
With all this talk about how the Aero 5050XL is supposed to do so much, and I've not really seen or felt any real, STRONG, evidence that any of it is true, it's been suggested that, it's possible that the muffler MAY have been installed incorrectly, as in "backwards".

Well, I've inspected mine from one end to the other, all the way around the outside circumference and, the only thing on that muffler is:

There is no arrow or, indent, or any sign of DIRECTION OF FLOW, imprinted on the outside of that muffler. I did not do the install. Brazels did it while we were at Quartzsite AZ at the annual RV event. Now, the direction of the writing you see in the picture, is backwards on mine. But, apparently that means nothing., I've watched some install videos and I've seen the writing backwards on more than a few so, I think about the only way might be for me to send my long lensed inspection camera up the exhaust to see if I can tell what it looks like.

What did it look like when looking in from each end? I would think it would look different, I read on another forum that a guy had a loud "drone" noise from his, turned it around and helped with the noise.

Mine had inlet and outlet stamped in the metal near the ends of the muffler.

Palehorse89,
Well Sir, I've seen that picture on a few sites and, according to the flow, and the outer shell of the muffler, mine is installed CORRECTLY! You see the two ridges that are formed in the one end and none in the other? Well, that apparently is (until further notice and investigation) the only evidence I have that indicates the muffler is installed correctly. Thanks for that picture.

Hey Ciderdog,
Well apparently they must make different versions of the 5050XL. Now, again, since I did not do the install, I can only assume that Brazels did NOT cut anything off the ends of the new muffler prior to the install so, if there was/is any indicators of flow, i.e. arrows, signs, anything, it's not on mine. In one of the videos I watched when researching this, the two guys installing one on a Dodge or Ford, 'can't remember right now, show, at the very end of the video, a tiny white and black "sticker" that shows flow and, they mention it by saying "you can't install it wrong, it has this sticker on it." Well, obviously if mine had a "sticker" on it, it was burned off before the rig got out of their installation area.

So, I'll just ASSUME it's on correctly at this time. As for the noise, it's one of two things. One, other users are simply not admitting that theirs is considerably noisier than the stock muffler or, two, for some odd reason, there are engine/exhaust operational characteristics on all these motorhomes. I mean why, would mine be so considerably louder than a buddies who, has an '01 36 Journey with the 3126, (which is virtually the same engine as my C-7 330 HP) be almost the same amount of exhaust noise as it was when it had the stock muffler in it?

And you'd think by virtue of the design of my system which, has almost twice as many bends in it than his does, that mine would be even more quiet than his which, only has ONE 90 degree bend.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Call the company he'll tell you in a minute.

Mine only had a sticker on it.

On most of these improvements it is not going to be night and day. It's like a little here and a little there with an over all improvement. Your pushing 30000 lbs around, unless you double the HP or Torque its there but not slap in the face noticeable. In a tank or two of fuel over the same road maybe better fuel mileage or holding a gear on a hill you couldn't before.

Scott,
You had mentioned in another post (I can't find it), that you did not like the sound of the Aero muffler. I installed a 5" Resonator in front of my Aero muffler and it made a big difference in lowering the sound level. You can find them online for about $80-90. It did not restrict the flow in any way.

Good luck

rver98,
I'm sorry for the late reply. We're on a trip and we don't have access to the net on a daily basis. I surely thank you for you assistance in trying to help me with the excessive noise of this muffler, if you can call it that. When we get back home, I might just have to look into that resonator. Thanks a heap.

Scott, you have always been informative on this forum and I thought I would repay the favor. This made a big difference on my MH. Enjoy your trip and safe travels home.

We all have experience in something, some would not notice the increase in power if it were doubled, some can detect a 50 hp increase very easy.
Me, I do not get excited by tbe Aero Muffler due to the restrictive design yes it is better than a muffler, but I being more into performance chose the Walker resonator. Due to the straight thru design of the Walker. The 5" in/out, it does reduce the harshness a lot.

I installed it not for the HP gain, I'm there is some, but for the MPG and that paid for itself right away

Dave,
The Aero exhaust web site says it is a straight through muffler. I could see thorough mine before I installed it. Following is from Aero muffler website:
Product Description

The AT5050 is a short straight through muffler that is designed to eliminate restriction in a diesels exhaust system while dampening the exhaust tone. The AT5050 works great on the Duramax and Powerstroke engines to reduce exhaust gas temperatures and still produce the clean sounding turbo spool that every diesel owner admires. Dimensions: 20 inch long 7.5 inch diameter 5 inch inside diameter inlet and outlet
