Any good way to assess water pump?

Assuming itís not leaking, any way to assess its condition to prevent unplanned repairs?

Pulley play? Bearing roughness?

Seems unwise to replace if not needed....

Since you didnít mention what engine you have my response is for a 3126 or C7.

One way to assess your water pumps basic condition would be to take off the belt and check the water pump pulley for excessive play in all directions and smooth operation when rotating. Do the same for the belt tensioner pulley.

Treat the tensioner bolts with penetrating oil before trying to loosen and be gentle, you donít want to snap one of those bolts.

Here is a picture of both pulleys from below.

Thats my plan...

Checked the tensioners for the big belt... that one rumbles so replaced...
