C-7 Valve Adjustment
I have a 2005 Fleetwood Expedition with a 7.2L Cat. It as approx. 46,000 miles on it. Is the valve adjustment really necessary or could it wait until it ever needs further service? So far the only thing I have done is oil changes, fuel, oil and air filters, washed the radiatior and taken coolant samples yearly.

Yes. Had my brother in law come to my house (mobil diesel mec.) and took him about 1/2 hour. I opened up the bed and took cover off for him. valves were a little tight. First outing picked up about 1mpg and the biggest thing i could pull most of the hills in the next gear higher than before. 06 journey 38,000 miles,C-7 cat

Cat recommends changing out the thermostats every 3 years.

Just my opinion but having the valves adjusted as recommended by Cat is much less expensive than doing a valve job if the valves & valve seats become burned because they do not set properly. Performance & fuel economy should increase after the valves are adjusted.

Since posting my valve adjustment question I have spoke to a caterpillar technician who owns his own mobile service. He claims that sort of maintence is normally completed at 100,000 miles. I think I am now more confused.

When in doubt call the Cat RV engine tech support line. If you don't want to believe them like some here you are on your own. Cat says do it at 30,000 miles.

I have 46K on my C7 and talked to my local Cat Shop and the Mgr told me that OTR Trucks might need adjustment between 80 and 100k.
I don't think that you have to worry about valves burning as the adjusted clearance takes the slack out between the rocker arm and push rod - If you hear valve noise then you should think about having the valve lash set. This is from a Cat shop.

When I had mine done at 35,000 miles I was surprised at the difference it made and how much better the engine ran. I also had them update the engine software while they were at it so that may have contributed some also. I was told that my valves were "tight" meaning that it could have led to burnt valves at some point. I'm glad I had it done.
