Tier 1 emissions started in 1994. So anything after that has to comply. But Caterpillar was cleaning up exhaust smoke long before that Why? Fuel economy for one and they could see the writing on the wall. Acert named engines were and are emissions engines. They control emissions through timing , governor controls, and injection systems. Emissions and improved fuel consumption. Injection systems went from 600psi injection to 1500 psi- 2500psi now 30,000 psi systems. So Acert may not have the visible components but they are there.
When Caterpillar went to common rail systems with Def injection their fuel mileage went up. Adding the DEF to knock down the NOX allowed Caterpillar to better tune their engines. Because to meet prior NOX the engines had to be detuned.
You think the new DEF and DPF were troublesome on On hiway engines/RVs? You should have the seen the problems the heavy equipment engine users had with the systems. Was nightmare for
awhile. Trying to get operators/mines to allow enough time for the engines to regen. Painful.Painful. Safe Travels.
