Cat 525 hp

Looking at a 2006 coach with 525 hp Caterpillar engine. I have a 3126B CAt that we're very happy with.

What can be expected of the bigger, newer Caterpillar in terms of reliability and performance ?

Should be better than a Cummins ISX for reliability, but probably more expensive to repair.

Can't comment on how expensive to repair, I've never had a repair. I replaced the belt, and it was not cheap, but I've never had to buy one for a Cummins. Problem is it is a bit of an odd size, but that is because of the coach manufacturer.

I get about 7 mpg pulling a Suburban in the mountains. Not so bad. Pulls well, loves to climb, never let me down.

You do have to remember that aside from the engine, there is the way it was installed by the coach maker. The one time mine wouldn't start it was the ignition lead to the starter solenoid that had corroded off because Monaco didn't use a heat-shrink connector. Fixed it myself, since it was below freezing in a snow storm I wasn't too happy with Monaco that morning.

I love my Kitty CAT C13 525hp. No matter how long it sits it starts right up, it pulls beautifully on hills once you learn to drive it (lower rpms are best) since it makes its max torque at around 1250 rpm. My only complaint is my fuel mileage is 5.4 no matter how I drive it. Found out I was 6 updates behind in my ECM but non of the updates were for fuel mileage. I can pull a 6% grade in economy's mode on the trans setting the cruise at around 54mph and I will top the peak at around 49mph. I love it.
PM me and I will give you my phone number if you want to discuss maintenance, repairs, etc. Always happy to talk motorhome.

That mileage does seem kind of low. Our ISX has 1950 ft lbs from 1100 to 1600 rpm and we get 7.6 mpg over 45,000 miles. I actually like to leave the trans in economy mode most of the time. Doesn't seem to make much difference in hill climbing or acceleration either, probably not fuel mileage either!

Thanks for the flash info. If I read your sheet correctly you have engine SN KCB21422 and the 291-2048 flash from 2006. Anyone know if that is correct?

According to my PO I have had two reflashes by CAT, one to 291-2076 in 2006 and one to 335-7819 in 2008 and my engine SN is lower (older). I don't think the flash codes are on size fits all. The correct one depends on injector and turbo PN as well as rating (RV, Fire truck etc).
