CAT C7 Thermostat Jiggle Pin Removal?

On our CAT C7 powered '05 Safari Cheetah, with 67,000 miles, I am replacing all coolant pipes and hoses, as well as the coolant and both CAT 115-4223 (190 degree) thermostats (Caterpillar calls them "regulators"). The replacement thermostats I bought, like the originals, have a jiggle valve designed to allow trapped air to escape from the thermostat housing so that warmed coolant will open the thermostat earlier. Who even noticed there was such a thing? One website stated that Caterpillar has now eliminated the jiggle valve, but kept the small hole which previously held the jiggle valve. This website, which I now can't find, said that Caterpillar recommends removal of the jiggle valve on earlier versions of the 115-4223 thermostats. Has anyone else contemplated jiggle valve removal? The trade off apparently is that removal of the jiggle valve would allow more coolant to bypass the thermostat, slowing engine warm-up, but improving resistance to thermostat fluctuation and overheating under load.

I never heard of the jiggle valve! I would call Cat and ask them directly. AND let us all know the answer. Replacement of all of those parts as you are doing is on my list of to do items.

Is the 190 degree thermostat normal? Did you have problems with overheating prompting you to do this maintenance?

I found these comments on another forum. I had to look up what was a "giggle pin" since you mentioned it!!!!! BTW, these comments were made 3 years ago, so part numbers could have changed since that time.

The only change or upgrade to the temperature Regulator was the removal of the jiggle pin temperature regulator because the jiggle pin would stick and overheat problem.

... the "old" version of the 115-4223 thermostat (with the jiggle pin) is rated as 190 degrees F, while the "new" version of the 114-4223 thermostat (without the jiggle pin) is rated at 206 degrees F. So, as I stated in my initial posting, CAT increased the temperature of the 115-4223 thermostat by 16 degrees F, without changing the Part Number.

The Caterpillar parts website still lists the 115-4223 part number for the C7. The post that stated it is now a 208 degree thermostat is in error - Caterpillar previously specified the temperature at which the thermostat begins to open (190); later they changed to the temperature at which it fully opened (208). It' still the same , other than the jiggle valve/pin. My Scan Gauge was consistently showing 188 to 192. I never had overheating, but I saw seepage on two coolant pipes and heavy rust on the third; plus the plastic coolant reservoir was a problem waiting to happen, and it had to be removed for access to the seeping pipe from the thermostat housing to the upper radiator hose. It's a messy, frustrating job, and I can't imagine the labor costs if you had to have it done at a shop. Most recommendations I have seen suggest replacing thermostats every few years.

Thank you for the response. I had also seen those on another site, but could not find them again when I wanted to refer to them. A video I viewed from a person who seemed very knowledgeable was the source for my statement that the 190 degree and 208 degree versions are both designed to begin to open at 190 and to be fully open at 208. Since I never encountered overheating with my original thermostats, I'll probably leave the jiggle pins/valves intact on the new ones.
