Cat oil filter availability
Forgot I had another question on Cat filters. I've always used Cat filters if at all available and have been able to purchase the oil filter (IR-1807) at the same Freightliner shop where I purchase the Alliance primary fuel/water filter. But now the Freightliner shop has stopped carrying this oil filter, which is for my 2004 330 HP Cat engine, cause the engine is smaller than what they normally service. This means I have to purchase the Alliance filter from Freightliner then drive another 4-5 miles up the Interstate to the Cat shop for the oil filter.
Is anyone else with the smaller Cat 330 HP engine having trouble getting the Cat oil filter unless they go to a regular Cat supplier? I was wondering if a filter for a larger engine would also work on the 7.2L 330 HP engine.
After no problem for over 10 years now all at once they've changed the number on my Alliance filter and no longer carry the oil filter. If I was ordering the engine air cleaner and Allison tranny filters it would probably pay to order the engine filters at the same time, but by their selves the freight would be too high.

Donaldson makes filters for Cat and are good filters
ELF 7483 is the best filter
P551807 Standard 1807 filter
Both meet or exceed Cat spec's
I get my filters from truckhelp.com

Maybe this particular FL shop just decided they didn't sell enough of them to continue to stock it, kind of like Wal Mart.
I may have to try the Donaldson filters if I continue to have this problem.

wagonmaster2, why not use the Alliance oil filter? Then you wouldn't have to drive to the Cat dealer to get your oil filter. They are good filters. They are made by Wix, which is what I use on my C 7. I have been using Wix air, fuel and oil filters on my rig since I bought it. I also their filters on my generator.
The only reason I don't use Alliance filters on my rig is because there isn't a dealer here where I live.

I buy Cat oil and fuel filters at a Cat dealer and carry them in my coach, so I have them whenever/wherever I service my coach, (or have it serviced).

The Wix filter to use is the 51791XE
The absolute micron rating is very important when selecting a filter.
Not to be confused with the Normal micron rating.
What you want is a filter that has 99.9% efficiency at the lowest micron size.
Cat IR 1807 absolute micron rating 24 microns
Donaldson P551807 absolute micron rating 21 microns
Donaldson ELF 7483 absolute micron rating 15 microns
Wix 51791XE absolute micron rating 15 microns

The Freightliner shop also carrys the Fleetguard filter which they offer as an alternative to the Cat product
I do the maintenance on our coach myself and if you do as well I highly recommend the Fumoto drain valve. Makes oil changes impossibly fast and easy

That's what I'm trying to do at this time. I won't actually need the filters till December or January but since I've always purchased all my filters, including the Cat oil filter, the Cat secondary fuel filter, and the Alliance primary water'fuel from the same Freightliner shop it has thrown me a curve to learn they aren't carrying them all anymore. I'm visiting relatives 200 miles from home and that's where this FL shop is, which saved me a one-way 90 mile trip just for these filters or freight to order them. I'm definitely going to have to change my plans from now on.
