Check engine light flashing - no stored codes

On my last trip, I saw the Check Engine light flash for a couple seconds then go off. It did this twice during the trip. I checked my ScanGaugeD and there are no codes stored.

So maybe ScanGauge is not saving the codes, or could there be some situations (whatever is making the CE light come on) where the CAT ECM is programmed to not store a code? Seems that would be odd - to alert driver something is "out of the norm", but not provide info as to what is out of norm.

Are there any conditions where the Check Engine light would blink and not store a code?

If under a heavy load, like going up hill, it could be a low fuel pressure warning.

That would suggest fuel filter replacement.

That's worth doing.
But why would light flash then not store a code? What's the purpose of the CE light flashing if driver has no way to know what it means?

I'm thinking the CAT ET scan tool would be able to pull a code - just not my ScanGaugeD device.

I'm not familiar with Scangauge. But it may not show event codes. Event codes are different than diagnostic codes.

There are Active AND History stored codes.
SG will show the Active code, once it is not an Active code (Meaning whatever is wrong is Ok), it becomes a stored code.
To see the Stored (History) code you will either need to do the code by computer or the flashing check engine light.

Thanks for that info. I'll try to use the diagnostic feature with the cruise control (and count the flashing CE light) to see what was going on.

Is there an inexpensive code reader that you would recommend that can read the active and history (event) codes?
