Disable fuel pump

I see there are a few retired Cat mechanics on this forum so what better place to ask.

I have a 1999-3126B and a 2001-C16. Both engines have to sit for one to three months without being started. I use mineral based oil in both. I realize some on here say it is not necessary but I would prefer to have the oil pressure up before they flash. Both engines fire up instantly and in my mind that has to hurt. (Dry metal on metal can't be good)
So my question is. Is there an easy way to disable the fuel pump so I can crank these engines for 10 to 15 seconds before ignition? The key word here is easy.
Hope to hear from some in the know how.
Cheers
Dave

You could trip the governor on the engines and pump away

I think I need more step by step instructions. Both these engines are electronic. When you talk governor I envision spinning weights on a mechanical engine.

Cranking is the same as it running; the motor is just being turned a different way. So you will have the same things happening for 15 seconds cranking by starter as you would running by injectors.

I would think a lube pump is the only thing to prevent this.

I disagree. You would have a lot more force hitting the bearings and bushings with the engine firing than you would spinning it with the starter. Piston skirts too. Granted the air in the cylinders still has to be compressed but no where near the violence internally as when the fuel is exploding.

If these are electronic engines then I think the only way to crank the engine without starting would be to kill the fuel injector electrical side. That probably wouldn't be too difficult with a wiring diagram but have you thought of a prelube system. I found a couple online, probably not cheap but if you want it give them a call.

I am going to make a guess here........if you were to call Caterpillar they would tell you this is not necessary to do, there is equipment with Cummins, Cat, Detroit engines that sometimes sits for a lot longer than you are talking about and start just fine, without damage. The film from the oil will provide the lubricating during start up and the oil pressure is on its way within seconds, if you want to, roll it just a bit and shut the key off before firing, do this several times......oil pressure primed.Give a Authorized Cat dealer a call and see what they say.

Calling Cat would be the logical thing to do even though I have had bad advice from Finning in Surrey in the past.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I'll dig a little deeper into fuel shut off. I don't think I'll go with a pre-lube system as that's just one more component to go wrong.
