Fuel in Oil - CAT C9
First the clues -
Oil pressure at idle just 15 lbs - noticed that after exiting highway.
Oil film on Toad.
Oil level on Dip stick way over high limit.
No clear leaks.
History -
Occasional injector miss when cold and it goes away when warmed up.
Notes -
Running oil pressure is about 40lbs
Running fuel pressure is about 85 lbs
Fuel and oil system come together in the injectors, in the transfer/fuel pump. Seal failure possible.
Antifreeze levels are normal.
No engine codes, no alarms.
The fix -
Replace all injectors because there is no way to tell which one is bad.
Replace the transfer/fuel pump.
I am very mechanical have the tools but never did this kind of work so I hired a mobile CAT mechanic to do it and I assisted. Learned a lot too.
This engine has the HEUI pump and the fuel pump is attached to the rear of it. So the HEUI comes off and every part near the assemblies. About 7 lines got removed, 2 sensors disconnected, Primer pump, breather tubes and intake heater solenoid removed. Basically everything on the side of the engine except the air compressor.
Had to drain antifreeze so it got replaced.
Cost was about $10,000

Was sufficient access possible through the bedroom hatch and underneath, or did you pull the radiator as well?

Sorry to hear your problems but good thing that you were able to get it fixed.
Did you have to replace the injectors due to high mileage?
I would’ve thought you could just replace the O-ring seals and gaskets and reuse the injectors

Did not pull radiator. The pump work was done on the side of the engine. Access was from the top and you could sit up on the side. Injectors are all on top, easy access though hatch.

Had 75,000 miles on Injectors. None of the o-rings looked bad but they can have internal issues you may not be able to see.

Just curious… would an oil analysis prove diesel oil was in fuel? Does it just show up as low viscosity?

I sent the sample to be analyzed and told them I had fuel in the oil and they confirmed it saying the viscosity was off and they made an estimate I had 7.5% fuel in the oil. I can't say they had any special way to figure that out had I not said anything.
To me it was clear this had happened. Oil sprayed on toad without finding leak and overfull by 1.5" on the dipstick.
Update - I also discover high fuel pressure at 120 lbs as the regulator had failed.

Yes, fuel dilution is tested for during used oil analysis and displayed as a percentage
.
There are several different method used....least accurate basically amounts to a lab making an educated guess based on viscosity loss ....the problem with this is "shear' also causes viscosity loss and has nothing to do with fuel dilution
The most accurate test is ASTM D92.....gas chromatograph.
Fuel dilution above 2% starts to become a problem.

How difficult would it have been to just replace the regulator?

The regulator is not hard to replace, easy access, 20 min job.

I have an oil consumption issue that I have chased for years. I though I was getting fuel in the oil so I pulled the injectors and replaced the seals. Sadly no change in the consumption. Did you replace those expensive cat bolts that hold the injectors in place? they recommend new at 20.00 each for the big ones. I am handy with tools but this was my first time pulling injectors, by biggest fear was dropping a bolt down into the engine at the bottom of the head.

Yes I did this by the book and replaced all the injector bolts.
