HEUI Pump
Was there a certain series of HEUI pumps that are suspect. I wonder if there are certain serial number pumps that could be considered as being somewhat more prone to failure than a later series of pumps. Anyone have that type of info??

72,000 miles on my 3126E and not a hitch. I love it. In a 34ft MH it will pass everything going uphills towing a C-RV and still get 8mpg.

Poncho:
Not sure the residue signals a pending huei pump issue, however, it could definitely signal a future issue with a clogged radiator. Here is the short story: Coming down underneath the motorhome, about midway point, is a breather tube that spits out fine droplets of oil. These droplets get sucked into the rear radiator and sometimes can be found on the tow vehicle. Over time this clogs the radiator and causes an overheating problem. I assume that you have a freightliner chassis. If you go to the freightliner website and type in "overheating engine", you'll find lots of information. I also found a great suggestion for a fix and the manner in which to correct this issue. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll see if I can get you the info somehow.
I would definitely get the radiator checked out. Hope this helps.

Get the new ECM Flash for sure!
I just had #5 and #6 injectors replaced by Michigan Cat on my 2005 C-7 350 hp with 72000 miles. I got great service and the bill was about $1600. I also got the 10% catrvclub.org parts discount. You can get this if you belong to FMCA and the catrvclub. $65 spent to get a $122 discount.
The best thing is that they flashed the ECM with software #3410800. I have instant throttle response, more horsepower, and mileage went from 7.5 mpg to 9.1 mpg while towing a jeep at 62 to 70 mph. This upgrade would have saved me $5000 in fuel if it was in the engine from the start. I now love the engine, but the injectors should last way longer than 72000 miles.
What actually causes the injectors to die? I don't think they were plugged. Maybe some kind of electrical issue. Maybe the new software will help that too.

huei pumps
Nino: Not quite sure what CAT has done to help you and I the consumer. What I have learned is this (mainly from other posts on IRV2 and as always it could be subject to correction or revision). To the best of my knowledge from what I think is the case....CAT had a problem with Huei's about 2003. Some say it was a bearing issue in the pump. CAT supposedly did not do any pump upgrades until 2006 or 2007. So, after 2006/2007 one would surmise that if they had a Huei pump issue with the earlier model, it would be replaced by an upgraded pump. Who really knows? And, how could you be certain? In my case this September, I had the original pump replaced in Riverside, CA. Worked fine for the first 300/400 miles, and then in Arizona, another pump failure, and a second pump installed. The second pump seems to work effectively. Did I have one of the older pumps reinstalled? I don't know. Someone on the iRV2 forum said that CAT still had a large inventory of the original first pumps, and upgrades wouldn't be installed until that inventory was depleted. Is this accurate, I don't know. It would seem to me that given the problems with the first pump design, CAT wouldn't want to create further problems for themselves or their customers by installing a pump with the same issues. My wife mentioned yesterday that when we talk about our 6 week trip to California, I never talk about anything other than the trouble that I had with the Huei pump. Well, that's because it is a very disconcerting and frustrating problem. Who wants to be driving across miles of hot desert and up mountains, and across other tough terrain, constantly wondering if the rig will do its job, and being stranded miles from a CAT or Freightliner facility. When my second problem occurred, I immediately wondered if I had gotten a "refurbished pump" of some type, not really knowing even if there was such a thing. My engine seems to run fine now on the basis of the last 1200 miles. MPG increased from 7.5 to 8.5 pulling an SUV (it remains to be seen if this is real or just a fluke). When I made my first post, it was just to alert other members that this issued existed. I certainly didn't intend to alarm everyone. If your rig is running well, great. Hopefully, no problems with the huei will emerge. I guess the best we can say about any mechanical isssue is......"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it." In the meantime, Life is a Trip, Enjoy the Journey!!
