High boost pressure Lower than normal power

I have a Cat C7 on a 2007 Workhorse chassis. I am experiencing higher than normal boost pressure and lower than normal power. Can someone please give me some insight on what could cause this and is it safe to drive home on Sunday if I can’t get it fixed here at the campground

Thanks for your input

Welcome to iRV2.

With virtually any diesel performance issue that doesn't set a code, the first (and least expensive) step is to replace the fuel filter(s).

Pour fuel from the old one(s) into a clean glass jar and see what is in there. If in doubt, cut the primary filter open.

And, with the Caterpillar engine, strongly recommend a Caterpillar final fuel filter.

Could it be something else-- sure, but start here.

Also, when you are in the engine room, verify that the exhaust brake is fully open. If a PacBrake brand exhaust brake, make sure it is properly lubed: https://pacbrake.com/product/c18037-superlube/

First question. Why and where do you think there is a Boost Pressure Sensor?

I would second the recommendation to check your exhaust brake. You probably have the standard cast iron flapper that closes across the exhaust system. If it sticks partially (or completely) closed, you will have reduced power, increased heat and increased boost pressure. Mine stuck closed once and I had to crawl under and knock it open with a hammer before I could proceed. That is when I learned to lubricate the blasted things. Good luck.

Based on your description that you have excess turbo pressure and sub standard engine power I would look at the following. There is a valve called the waste gate that bleads excess turbo pressure. If this valve or its associated solenoid is defective it will allow excess turbo pressure to exist, and the engine computer will derate the engine. You might get a ck engine and or stop engine alarm.

Lubricating the waste gate is one of the things that is supposed to be done to keep it moving freely. There are procedures to check the waste gate movements. Just Google Cat Waste gate.

Are you asking where the boost sensor is? I have a drawing showing the locations of all the sensors on the CAT engine if you want that.

Update the waste gate was stuck. Got it free and lubed up. Working great now.
Thanks for all the help

Great News!

Did you add a small amount of air pressure to the waste gate exhaust tube to see it work?
What lubricant did you use?
