How to test VVT engine brake on C9
Does anyone know how to test the engine braking function on a C9 with the VVT turbo (425 hp)? When I turn on the ‘engine brake’ switch, the engine downshifts but I don’t feel any more braking resistance than when I just downshift manually. I know the VVT braking is pathetic at best but want make sure it is working.

A CAT shop can plug into the ECM and run a test on the VVT to see if it responds correctly. However, if it did not work you would get a code and it would be noticeable with respect to engine performance.
I think your question is more about is the Exhaust Brake "command" getting to the ECM to tell VVT to close? The CAT shop scan tool would indicate if there is a command for exhaust brake to apply.
The only way I can think of to test this without CAT ET tool, would be to put a back pressure gauge in the exhaust manifold (before turbo) and see if the back pressure increases when the exhaust brake command is given.

Sounds like you've already done this, but manually downshift then turn on the brake, that way if there's any difference at all you'll be to tell.

Yeah, that’s how I noticed that using the engine brake didn’t offer any more braking than just downshifting. I’ll have my mechanic check out with the Cat software. Thanks for the replies.

If you find a better braking system, please share. I haven't found it. I have read that the older C9 with no VVT used an exhaust brake and was far superior.

Yep. Ours appears to be the worst possible engine brake there is...damn!

i need some education here. my motorhome is identical to tank cjs and the good captains, except my serial number identifies my engine as a 2006 400hp- no ard, dpf, pos, sob etc. i have always believed i had a pac brake [brand name] style exhaust brake, but i have never had reason to investigate. how do i determine if i have the vvt instead, other than its different from a pac brake? my understanding is that the vvt didnt show up untill the ard/dpf era

A cat expert needs to chime in but I am very sure you have a pac brake. Only the 425 hp C9-S has the VVT. I believe you also have the HUEI pump for the injectors whereas I have the common fuel rail. You are a lucky one!

Agreed. As I understand, the VVT was only used on the DPF equipped units.

What's your engine serial number? I'll check the build sheet on it.
