Just thought I would share my Covid19 stay at home project for something to do. Firstly, I am by no means an experienced painter and limited skills to spray cans, so no laughing please. As you can see there was plenty of surface rust bugging me. Thank you Fire up (Scott) on sharing your experience painting your pan several years ago.
So, I thought I would give it a try. I did not want to remove the pan to paint, nor did I want to use any of those hard core rust removal chemicals as I will be working upside down on the pan with just an n95 mask, not a full respirator. I called Rustoleum and they did not recommend rust reformer if my temp was close to 200 degrees, and most of their spray paints were same way - other than their engine enamel. So I just went to Cat and bought their primer and top coat. Will see if that was mistake.
Photo #2 - I scraped and wire brushed the loose rust, and cleaned it up, But not all paint was taken off. Then used my spray cans, 2 coats primer, 2 coats top coat. End product in photos 3 and 4. Not real smooth and pretty, I’m just trying to slow the rust down on a 19 year old oil pan.
Time will tell ! I don’t drive on salted roads. If it works, it works. If not, I’ve got a rusty peeling oil pan and out about $25.
