Sloppy turbo shaft

I pulled the cold side boot off of my 3126 turbo charger today while I was cleaning and double checking everything prior to my next adventure.

I can move the compressor wheel L-R and Top to Bottom about 1/10 of an inch.
There was no movement Front to Back. Is that movement normal or have I found something else to spend money on?

It would appear that you have contact between the compressor wheel and the housing . Yellow arrow .
Although the shaft does float on pressurize oil when spinning ; I'd say time for an overhaul, while it's still rebuildable.

I haven't been able to find the actual Cat spec , for turbo shaft play ; yet ; but common spec have a range of 0.010" to 0.20" . 1/10" = 0.100 so five times the max .
Saw new turbos on E bay for $370 USD for our Cat 3126Bs.

I replaced the turbo on my C7 a few months ago because I did the same as you. Mine didn't have as much play as yours, .100 is a lot. If you do decide to replace it I went with a new Borg Warner from M&D Distributors. It was the best price I could find on a well known brand turbo.

Its very difficult to estimate clearance by just wiggling. Many times people over estimate the movement. Its all not unusual for a housing in the turbine to have a stain/coloration around the wheel, hours of sucking air at times moisture (rain doplets) will cause a "stain/ film". Its good you have no end to end play. If you can slightly push the shaft toward the side and it drags on the housing- time to change it. If you shut the engine off at half throttle and listen at the exhaust and hear a tinging as the turbo slows down then it needs be changed. If the housing around the compressor wheel is scraped or gouged time to change it. If you can take a qtip and remove the mark around the compressor then its just a stain. Just a couple things to check before spending the money. Good luck.

In my own defense, I knew nuthin about diesel engines when I bought this coach!
Thought they were all the same, other than some were higher HP than others!

Thank God I didn't buy one with a 650hp ISX !!

There will be a small amount of Play there so as to allow the oil to lubricate the shaft during operation. It does spin at a Very High Rate of RPM's, not to mention up to 1100 degrees of exhaust gas temp. I would call your Cat dealer and ask them what that number would be.

I'm continuing to look for info on a spec for turbine shaft play; I've got a service manual for the 3126E and the turbo inspection section says to replace turbo if the blades are damaged or can be made to contact the housing . No measurement given . The document is WAY too large to post , I'll see if I can extract the pages on inspection.

Or spent a lot of time in a Canadian jail .

We're considering establishing a new prison on Baffin Island . No walls , just tents and no protection from the polar bears.
