I re-read my question to you and saw I didn't do a very good job.
To recap the events...
Found two sizable bits of a gasket in two of the oil filter inlet holes.
When CAT replaced the gasket from where the bits (hopefully) came, the gap in the gasket was accounted for by the bits found in the filter (I have a photo, just can't seem to find it).
So, it looks like the oil cooler gasket that was being replaced probably produced the bits I found in the filter and not a leftover from a repair, unless there is a design flaw in that area. Never say never and never say always, but....
If this gasket produced the bits I found in the filter, could it have been the gasket that was originally installed on the engine and not a repair?
