2500 Allison trans

Has anyone add an extra cooler for the 2500 Allison trans
If so how big of a job is it

I think that the Allison 1000 series transmissions and the 2000 series transmissions have the same external dimensions.

I needed more cooling capacity on my Allison 1000M and chose to add a deeper finned aluminum transmission pan. I am happy with the results. It is a much easier change than adding a traditional additional radiator.

My sump temps run about 140F when towing a Jeep behind my 34' motorhome on flat ground with outside temps in the 90's. I've never seen temps above 210F even on long steep grades with outside temps in the 90's.

My coach is 3 months old if I change the oil pan will that void the warranty

Unfortunately I didn't have a temperature gauge before I installed the pan. I had an incident where the instrument panel warned me of transmission over temperature. I was climbing the west side of Wolf Creek Pass towing a Jeep.

I settled on the pan option rather than the external cooler because I didn't want to cut into the lines. I installed the temp gauge when I installed the pan.

Most users report about 20F decrease in sump temperatures. When I compared my sump temps with those reported by others here I see about the same reduction.

You would have to contact your chassis supplier or possibly Allison to determine if you would void your warranty.

Why do you think you need an auxiliary cooler?

If you choose to go this route you can get the pan MUCH cheaper on Amazon.

Hi Gary,

If I read correctly, your coach is new. Allison uses the Transynd TES-295 approved fluids in your transmission. You can't find anything better than what is in it! This stuff is expensive!

I would get all my catch pans immaculately clean, drain the pan install the new pan then return the fluid to the transmission. This pan holds about 1 qt more than the stock pan so you will have to add a qt. Harbor Freight and others sell a pump that fits into a standard 5 quart oil bottle. Get a long tube from Lowes etc. Clamp the tube outlet to the pump and pump away. It is difficult to get it in any other way.

While you are at it, change the external filter. Don't forget to move the magnet from the top of the old filter to the new one. It sort of looks like a gasket.

If you want new oil, Pep Boys recycles oil. There are other facilities that do as well.

This isn't difficult but be sure to keep EVERYTHING spotless. Don't introduce dirt into the transmission.
