3000 shifting fine not reading the right gear

It will show R and N fine but when driving it will either be in 2 or 6 nothing else. It shifts just fine just not showing the correct gear.

Do you have a shift selector with a single digit display?

If so, that's normal. It shows the gear selected, not the gear attained.

So, when selecting drive, it shows 6 and stays there. Sounds like you have an engine or exhaust brake. When you apply the engine or exhaust brake, it preselects to 2.

Is the exhaust brake turned on? Mine only shows 6 or 2. 6 normally, 2 when the exhaust brake is active. However, it will show the gear I select manually. It will only show the gear selected, not the gear that the transmission is currently running in.

I really wanted to know what gear I was in plus more info from the engine so I got a VMSpc and set it up with a small laptop on the dash. That was clear back before 2002 on a 2000 Dutch Star. When we got the '02 Dutch Star I got a new connection setup and used it till we traded for the present rig which has a 400 CL built in.
The VMSpc is a good way to monitor lots of engine outputs too.
