3060 Filter Confusion

The information below(posted 500 days ago by quikduk) is a bit unclear to me.
I have an older Allison # 6510007900.
I am switching to Transynd.
Do I use the filters listed for the "old" Allison or the Gold Series filters listed with the Transynd?
I have read about high capacity filters as well. Is there an application for my Allison?
Are there now different Allison filter part #s that apply.
Thanks for any guidance.

"Per the Allison authorized repair shop

Based on my trans. serial #6510135371, here is what will work for my MD3060:

Allison supports ANY trans fluid that meets or exceeds the TES-295 standard. They of course "like" you to use Transynd as they get $$$ from the sale in a partnership agreement but other brands are acceptable as long as they meet the standard.

Old (Allison WT units up to #6610092268)

VH 660861003 Automatic transmission fluid Shell Donax TA
(meets GM Dexron III and Allison C4 specifications)
Initial fill: 47 US Qts / Refill: 37 US Qts
Allison 29501202 Main filter 1 (2 quarts for filter change ONLY)
Allison 29509723 Lube filter 1 (8 quarts for filter change ONLY)

New (Allison WT units from #6610092269)

VH 10786691 Automatic transmission fluid Castrol Transynd
(meets Allison specifications for severe duty and exended drain intervals (TES 295) and GM Dexron III and Allison C4 specifications)
Initial fill: 47 US Qts
Refill: 37 US Qts
Allison 295387231 Main filter Product Line Gold Series 1 (2 quarts for filter change ONLY)
Allison 295387232 Lube filter Product Line Gold Series 1 (8 quarts for filter change ONLY)
VH 10801799 Tag, "This transmission uses TranSyndÿ..." 1

The MD3060 "should have a 4" deep pan. The filter kit includes both deep filters and both new and old gaskets/o-rings and costs about $52.

You can go with either fluid but a change of type requires a filter change. The synthetic does not really cool the transmission better. It primarily extends the service interval but is more efficient and produces less debris in the fluid. The service intervals are listed below for standard/extreme use with extreme being HD towing, running up/down big hills, heavy throttle use etc.

Dextron III: 25,000/12,000 miles (fluid AND filters)

TES-295 Synthetic: 75,000 (filters) and 300,000/150,000 (fluid)

As you can see, the switch to synthetic extends both the filter and fluid change intervals with only filter changes required in between the overall mileage numbers."

David,

If I understand your question, you are asking for conformation of the correct filter kit for your 3060 transmission.

Per Allison:

2 inch Filter Kit P/n 29548987
4 inch Filter Kit P/n 29548988
These numbers are the newest high capacity filters. The previous filters are no longer produced and should not be used as you will not get the maximum time and mileage change interval. These kits do contain all necessary o rings & gaskets.

THANKS Steve!
Exactly the clarification I needed.
Should a flush be done when switching to Transynd or just a drain and refill?
One post said Allison did not recommend a flush.

David,

Allison no longer recommends flushing. The procedure to change over to a TES295 fluid (Transynd) is drain & replace filters & fluid. Then replace a second time at a 12-24 month interval. After the second fluid and filter change you are considered to have 100 TES295 fluid with a 36 month filter change interval and 48 month fluid interval. Allison dealers are saying to change filters at 36 months and do a fluid analysis annually after that.

Just to chime in to simplify for someone after I spent a lot of time researching, I called Allison Tech Support and spoke with Carl. He said for my 2001 MD3060 (3000MH series) and with MY serial number 6510296482 ("old" w/4"sump), the filter kit is 29558329 and includes both filters, gaskets and oil rings (plus instructions). I ordered these from Pacific Power Group on 9/8/2020 for $54.50 + $8 shipping (plus tax).

It's been suggested to replace the 'freeze plug' as some call it. It is the plug on the opposite side of the dipstick tube. As they age, they may leak making you think you have a bigger problem so for around $25, while you're under the coach changing filters and oil, you might do a little preventive maintenance by replacing that plug and the seal for it.

Plug - Allison p/n 29530328
Seal - Allison p/n 29546229

This is for MY serial number. Allison Support is 800-252-5283 option 3 to make sure you get the right part numbers. I was on hold for less than 1 minute.

Good luck DIY's!
