3rd gear

1999 Dutch Star DP 3884
I have had the RV for 3 years now. The 3rd gear has a slip going into to gear when its cold. Today it did it 2 times when its hot. And I think when its not slipping its grinding when it goes into 3rd gear?
What’s to check?
Where do I take it
What the cost do rebuild one?
Can you shop around to get one rebuilt ?
cat 300

When was the last time the fluid and filters had been changed? If it has not been done in the 3 years you have owned it, get that done first. Look and ex amain the old filters for metal. Then if no problems is found and you still are having problems try unhooking one of your battery terminals for a day or two as doing this will wipe out the shifting pattern that the Allison has learned from your driving habits and see if that works. There is a way to reset the Allison from the key pad but you will have to do a search on here or the web and find it and following it will reset it instead of pulling the battery terminal. And if none of this works I would say it is off to the Allison shop to have it looked at.Good luck

Palehorse89,
Do an oil analysis on the fluid first and let's see what it shows.

As Tom suggested above maybe a oil test is in order as a starting point.
You did not tell us if you have changed the tranny oil and the filters or had it done since you bought it?
