Allison 100/200 transmission

I have a 2010 Tiffin Allegro Open Road with a workhorse chassis with and a 1000/2000 allison transmission. For the last couple of months it has been upshifting and downshifting by itself erratically while accelerating? Any ideas? I took to service shop and they are recommending either send the transmission out to be rebuilt or purchase a whole new transmission. I was thinking maybe the TCM? I don't know? any ideas would be great. Thank you

Workhorse chassis with the 8.1L , V-8, the transmission in use is a Allison 1000 series .

Is the problem worse if the roads are wet ?
Does the engine performance seem normal ?
Is the transmission fluid , discolored or burnt smelling ?

Was the shop an authorized Allison dealer ?
Getting any fault codes from the 1000 series requires special shop tools .

As you suspect , I would think yours is an electronic problem, too.

I ask about wet roads , because GM in their pick up trucks using the same engine and transmission had issues with water intrusion in the NSBU ( Neutral Start Back Up ) switch , that caused shifting issues and sometimes would lock the transmission in second gear.

Is the fluid level good?

Has the fluid and spin-on filter ever been changed?

How many miles are on the RV?

First thank you for responding. Ok so no difference in wet roads and engine performance seems normal minus the up and down shifting. They are not an authorized allison dealer. They said the fluid does smell burnt. Thank you skip426

All the 2010 Workhorse chassis with an Allison left the factory filled with TranSynd ATF. If not replaced already, it is now at least 12 years old. I think you should drain and replace it with either a TES-295 approved ATF or use the newer one TES-688 approved ATF. Change the spin-on filter P/N 29539579 and reuse the magnet that looks like a flat washer. IF the problem persists, go to an Allison approved shop for diagnostic and repairs. I would never use a non-approved trans shop to “fix” an Allison.

Along with the fluid / filter change, this might be a good time to call "UltraRV" and order their uprated TCM.
I did their TCM / ECM, plugs and wires as soon as I got our "new to us" coach back home from SLC, Utah, two years ago.
Two trips to Florida and back has convinced me I did the right thing.
