Allison 1000 Overheat

Eastbound on I-70 this afternoon.

I made it over Vail Pass @ 10,000' with no issues.

Loveland Pass went to one lane for road construction. I was about 50 yards from the Eisenhower Tunnel @ 11,000' behind a big truck in stop and go traffic when my transmission overheated and the coach came to a stop.

I had to sit there for about 5 minutes in neutral until I could get the coach onto the shoulder.

Another 15 minutes in neutral with the heater going full blast and I was able to continue on my way. It was 45 miles downhill into Denver. The transmission shifted fine and operated normally.

I have a scan gauge, it will not show the tranny temp, it should since I have a 5 speed, I suspect the scan gauge is defective, I bought it just before my trip.

I also changed the coolant and tranny fluid before this trip.

Tomorrow I will look the fluid over to see if it is burned.

Since it got hot enough to stop the coach, should I have it changed anyway? Im going to be in Denver for 5 days so I have time to find a shop and have it done.

IF you used a TES-295 fluid on the most recent exchange, you MAY be ok and not need to replace it. Oil analysis testing is cheaper than total replacement, and probably will save you some $$ in this case.

Unless your SG II has previously displayed TFT, I'm thinking it still needs to be programmed to do that. I believe it requires entering a set of numbers to create an "X Guage" that will read the 5 speed Allison. The LL SG II will NOT read the 6 speed, but you already knew that.

Since you also changed your coolant recently, are you sure the radiator is completely full? Sometimes they need more added after trapped air gets burped out. You can't trust the level in the overflow tank to indicate the level in the radiator itself.
