Allison 1000 with 16 quarts of fluid

Hello. I have a 2003 Adventurer, 8.1 workhorse with Allison 1000.
today I replaced the trans pan gasket (was leaking). by draining the fluid I measured 16 quarts of fluid. Way more than the specs of about 10.5 quarts to refill. Have no leaks through the breather or anywhere else. Shifts fine, no problems at all except the leaking pan gasket. How is this possible to be so off and according to the dipstick reading (hot) the fluid level is perfect.
Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.
Sincerely
Fritz

Two different trans pans available on the 1000 series .
If you have the deep pan that could account for the difference .

But with good performance with only 10.5 quarts added and proper dipstick reading , I'm confused too.

Although , looking at the pans in this photo , and depending on the dipstick location ; a full reading might not be a good indicator .
I'll see if any Allison fluid change documents can give any info .

EDIT: Second thought ; I always have them ;; perhaps , being over full was the cause of the trans pan gasket leak .
Had you checked fluid level on the dipstick before you drained the fluid ?

Thanks for your reply. I have the pan on the left side of your photo. It's considered the standard pan. I found this attached document online that actually states that it will take 19 quarts to fill. Even though the original manual from Allison says 10 quarts. I noticed that on the document on the top right corner it states "Allison transmission, MOTORHOME SERIES". Maybe that's what makes the difference. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Fritz

The document isn't clear , about the capacity being the amount that the trans takes new , rather than a service amount .

New would include the torque converter dry , where normal service doesn't fully drain the torque converter .
That would explain the difference between , what you drained and the pdf amount .

Dexron III. I don't think the type of fluid would make any difference to the amount needed though.

Thanks Skip426. You are correct. My Allison manual states 14.8 quarts initial fill and 10.6 quarts refill. Even with an initial fill there still is a difference of about 4 quarts compared to the info I sent you. sooo, that I don't understand why. Unless the trans cooler and hoses take that many quarts in addition to the transmission itself.

I asked because their Transynd Synthetic doesn't have to be changed every 25,000 miles.

I recently switched over to it just for that reason.
