ok, what I would do next is,
use a radio to talk to driver, ask them put in R,
watch cable, is it searching?( hunting back and forth)
is it moving slow? (not a consistent, fluid movement)
is it jerky?
try the scenario that it fails, then the one that works.
I bet what you find will be dirt in the black box that moves the cable. prolly fluch with contact cleaner ( safer than brake cleaner ( never use carb cleaner!!) )
