allison 2500 transmission hesitates going into reverse

Hi , I have a 2020 Tiffin allegro Red 340 with Allison 2500 automatic transmission. When I put the unit in reverse it seems to take 25 -30 seconds , or it will not go into reverse unless I go back to Neutral and then try again. Sometimes I have to move the motorhome forward a little more and then it goes into reverse at the normal speed (5 seconds or so). Any ideas, I am getting a mechanic out with diagnostic tool to plug into chasis to see if there are any codes. Thanks for your input!

The 2500 series has an Arens shift by wire system that can require calibration , or a poor connection internal in the NSBU ( Neutral Start Back Up ) switch can confuse the transmission controller .

I guess I should have asked if the shifter has the name Arens on it or if the side of the transmission has a mechanism like this on it.

Thanks , I don't think I can undertake the re calibration process by myself. I noticed my transmission fluid is high. Could this have anything to do with it. Or perhaps I could change the transmission filter (at the same time drop a little fluid to get to the right range.) to clear the issue. The wire actuator on the outside of the transmission pan) seems to move exactly the same distance in both scenarios. First scenario transmission moves to Reverse (R shows up in both columns in MH) Second scenario - (faulty one) One R shows up on shift pad inside the motorhome where I would need an R to show up in both columns to make it go in Reverse.
I had a local mechanic put a scanner on the ecu and there are no active codes showing up. Problem seems to be existent only when transmission is at operating temperature (78 degrees Celcius). I have warranty on the unit still , but I am 3 hours away from the service center, so I thought I could try a few little things. Sorry for long reply.

I do not believe that trans being over full would cause your issue .

BUT; that's just my opinion .

just went though this. there is 2 connectors on the actuator. one has larger wires, ( power) the other has smaller wires attached to the location sensor. this is the sensor you need to look at first. it is a wire connection to the sensor, then the sensor plugs into the housing. if is it not connected completely, it will make this happen. ours was loosing com and and not doing anything when buttons pushed. fist is get the allen wrench out, manually turn the motor. if it feels like broken glass grinding, remove the actuator and clean it out. large amounts of contact cleaner. if it is smooth, its the sensor. I have a load of PDF stuff from ARENS. the eng who designed it called me about it. apparently I asked the correct questions prompting his call. the last straw was u pushed the selector several times and nothing happened. as I got up out of the chair, it went into gear !!!!
you are welcome to contact me for more information directly. I can share what I learned and send pdf info...

if you have to replace the actuator, ( the wiper motor looking thing ) anything made after 2018 used different protocol and both the actuator and push button unit must be replaced.. I was luck, so very lucky, I found new old stock unit that was plug and play. these use the rig's network to communicate. j1939....
I have the re-cal info I can send. this sets up when pad sys N, it really is N..
here is parts info:

Dan , it sounds like you were put through the mill to get your problem fixed .

I'd started a thread on the Arens Shift By Wire units a couple of years back when a few members were posting about issues ( erratic no start and blown fuses , water intrusion ) , As these systems are now getting older , I imagine we'll be getting even more questions about them . So I guess it's time to re-instate my old thread , and link this post and your information to it.
Any information you have if the pdf is within the posting limits , please feel free to add it to the thread .
I'll get busy on it tonight .

not sure if this will show up. This is what my allison 2500 looks like. I have replaced the transmission filter, and will see if that has made a difference.

you have a cable shift ?????????
Wow!!!.. does the cable go directly to the shift lever in the cab, or is it connected to intermediary electronic device?

wow,, cable.. I hate to say it, but i like it way better than all the electronic stuff..

i would think the 2020 tiffin would still be under mfg warranty.
usually 3 years or 5 years, maybe longer on drivetrain.

not really. When the Arrens eng who designed it called me,
it was an easy fix.. I may have been able to save the old one by flushing the dirt out.. here in AZ, there is a really fine dust like dirt that often brings things to a halt.
One of my rentals has a roof ac that the motor bushings plug up with it. I use brake cleaner and compressed air to clean them out and the AC unit is good for another year or so.. when I used the allen wrench to rotate the shifter, it felt like grinding broken glass. and one of the tabs that hold the sensor to the housing had broken off and the location sensor was hanging out. I cleaned it up, JB WELD the sensor in place, put it in a box in the tool box on the rig. now I have a emergency spare.

Its a cable shift , hooked to the electronic shifter pad in the cab. The cable moves the exact same distance whether its grabbing the reverse gear or not. Perhaps its not reading the pressure correctly as it changes from Drive to N to R. I am thinking this would show up as a code. My Tiffin has a powerglide chasis.
