Allison RV HD3060 trans trouble

I own a 1999 Motorhome with a Allison 3000 series transmission. In the last year, about 8 months ago the trans started searching between 3rd and 4th back and forth for about 6 to 8 times. It could not find the right gear. After a while it corrects itself and runs perfect. Also seems like just before this happens the trans seems to shift early or very soon in to 5th gear as if you had the economy mode on. It just happened again today, the same thing as above, than corrected itself again and on the way home was perfect. Does anyone know what was happening or why it happens. Any help wound be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like a poor electrical connection on the transmission or TCU

How long since a fluid/filter change? Has the transmission been changed to TES295 (Transynd or equal)? Pulling a sample &sending to J G Lube services would be a good starting point. Here is the web site:

Tom Johnson, a retired Allison engineer who wrote the current TEC295 & TES389 specs, is available on this forum for questions. Look for the thread he authored.

I agree. Get an analysis. Could be the fluid or fluid level. Check both.

Hello, after it happened the 1st time, I had Freightliner change the transmission fluid with Dextron 111 on July 12, 2013. Since then it only happened one other time and that was today. Thanks

Did they also change the filters at that time?

Yes, they changed both transmission filters at that time. Also there are no codes when checking for codes and when I got home after 45 minute run, the oil level check said oL 70 which means temp was not hot enough. The transmission dip stick was reading at the bottom on the hot level gauge on the dip stick. Thanks, again.

Check for codes.
Suspect TPS starting to go bad, these things seem to have an age related life, not mileage driven.
