Allison Transmission filters
Changed my transmission fluid 6 months ago with Transynd and was told by Freightliner that it will last at least 75,000 miles. My question is do trans filters have to be changed periodically and additional transynd fluid be put in?

If you don't get to 75,000 miles before then, the transmission needs to be serviced after 5 years.

If you will add the year, make and model of your coach along with the make, model and hp of your engine to your signature, other members will have a heads-up when answering your questions.

Allison actually suggests that you will get 300,000 miles on Transynd, believe it or not. They recommend the filters to be done at 75,000 miles. (Based on a 3000 or 4000 Series transmission)
An RV is not a demanding application and I would suggest a lot of the time you will go over on time before Miles.
My personal recommendation is to service the fluid and the filters at the same time. If you service the filters only you will lose about 8 or 9 quarts of oil and I wouldn't recommend putting it back in, so you would have done a half change anyway if you top it up.
If you can be bothered reading it I have attached the Allison Bulletin relating to fluid changes. Transynd is referred to as TES295 fluid

As I read it the filter change frequency is an or statement. 75,000 miles or 36 months or 3000 hours which ever comes first.
Fluid general service. 150,000 miles or 4,000 hours or 48 months.
If this is true most of us would be just going by the months since mileage or hours are tough to hit in that time frame part time traveling.
36 months Filter Change
48 Months Fluid Change
I just sent my fluid out to be tested to see where I stand presently with the fluid.
I have only owned this coach for 1 year but the transynd conversion was done in 2009 and I do not have any records for fluid or filter changes since then.
I am expecting and hoping the test comes back fine at which point I will go ahead and just change the filters. As they would be 6 years old.

At 6 years I would be changing fluid and filters regardless. The fluid is 1 1/2 times over its recommended life and the filters are 2 times.
Someone once told me, the money you save by using cheap fluid or under servicing your transmission, wont buy very many transmissions parts to fix it when it fails

Allison Transmission
Yep I agree and that was my instinct but there are other documents about the fluid life and testing as an alternative from Allison. Filters always changed 36 months regardless.
Most likely I will do full fluid and filter change but anxious to see lab results as it was past due.
Edit:
It is also possible PO did change filters and fluid and I did not have that record. PO actually did a good job on keeping up on maintenance.

I had my filters changed as no receipts were in the box I got from PO. I was afraid that they were original but the tech said no way. Mine had an 08 manufacture date stamped on them so probably 08-09 change. Original filters are stamped with words to the effect "installed at factory."

The fluid is good for life as long as it tests good.

So if the fluid is testing good...why change the filters

Filter life is a function of the amount and size of debris particles floating around in the fluid which is also related to thermal and mechanical stresses, number of shifts and amount of particles of dirt and dust pulled in by the breather. If you check the fluid with a test kit that includes particle count and ISO Cleanliness Code, that will tell you more about fluid and filter condition than a normal fluid test kit. Ours is called an "Ultimate" Analysis.

PS: Fluids do have a finite life and nobody knows what it really is because there are too many variables. That's why you should check it annually with an oil analysis test kit. Generally, TranSynd and other TES-295 fluids will last up to 150,000 miles or more in the Allison 1000/2000 Series and up to 300,000 miles or more in the 3000/4000 Series.
