Allison transmission issues

I just brought home a 2003 Journey with the 5.9 Cummins and Allison 3000 transmission. This unit also has the exhaust brake. Not 20 miles into our trip home the trans light came on and while the exhaust brake still worked it would not automatically downshift and it also would not shift into 6th gear. I shut down the engine and this reset the system and it worked, for a little bit and then same issue. Even though it was 100 degrees out the engine was running perfectly cool so I am thinking the trans would also since they share cooling.
Any ideas? Output speed sensor to the computer possibly? Also had brake and AC issues so it was not a fun ride home. Seller tells me he had none of those issues. We will see where that goes. He seemed like a good guy and fixed an ABS problem before we could pick it up since he would not sell it with problems.

Use the Allison shift pad to check for DIAGNOSTIC CODES.

Details in your Allison manual or on-line or let us know if you can not get the "how to".

Allison Transmission issues

Are you sure it has the 3000? Usually, the baby engines go with the 2000 or 2500. If the lock up torque converter is not working, it will overheat. Hopefully some trouble code will identify a sensor or other easily fixed issue.

The specs say it is a 6 speed 3000 with exhaust brake. When it works I get all six speeds and the brake downshifts as it should. This has a manual shifter instead of the button pad so I am going to have to try to figure out how to get the codes from that.

Trans codes

I am not familiar with those earlier transmissions so sorry I can't be more helpful. There should be a way to use that fault light to "blink" the codes. Hopefully someone will chime in and give the procedure. I would suggest that this was not a first event for this failure.

To check for Diagnostic Codes on the Allison 3000/4000 and perhaps others:

Key on, engine off.

On the Allison shift pad, press the up and down arrows at the same time. That will bring up OL-- (for oil level, which at this point you are not interested in-- takes many highway miles to warm up the transmission to be able to use the shift pad to check fluid level).

Press up and down arrows again at the same time. That will bring up d-1 and two digit codes if there are any diagnostic codes.

If there is a d-1 code, after recording it, press the mode button to bring up d-2. Continue until d- "whatever" comes up - - meaning no more diagnostic codes.

Turn off key and look up the codes.

Let us know what you find. __________________

Here is the vin tag. Like most chassis is one year before coach and title. Chassis is 02 and coach is 03.

I will climb under it tomorrow and take a pic of the bottom of the trans.

Never seen that in a Coach Rick, you are going to have to go to a facility that has the Allison software on a laptop to hook up to the Allison TCM to see what is going on is my best guess..........

Ok, JUST FOR YOU GUYS, LOL. Really I needed to know myself. I went out in the 100 degree heat and climbed under there and looked it up. It is a 2000. So, My transmission issues still are there but now we know what transmission I have. Can anyone tell me anything about the rest of the data on that tag.

A little more info for those in the know. Since the first thing to check is always the last thing done. This vehicle just had a right rear wheel speed sensor replaced due to an ABS light and diagnosed by mechanic with Cummins insite. The owner had to go to a different shop to have the work done since sale to me was pending and diagnosing mechanic was too busy. Other shop replaced wheel speed sensor and returned to seller. I have been talking to the seller since there are multiple other issues not related to engine/transmission and he told me he had just taken a 600 mile trip recently with no transmission warning lights. This leads me to believe the wheel sensor and this transmission issue I am having are related. Any ideas on where I might look for something obvious?
