Can I do it myself?

New (to me) 2004 Itasca, W22 chassis w/ Allison 1000 trans, 26,500 miles on the odometer. I want to change the trans filter and fluid (to Transynd). I've always done my own maintenance, so unless special tools are involved, I'm pretty sure I can do this...I think...can I?

Just what all is involved?

Should be no problem if you have the place to do it.

By all means you can, it is a simple job.......Allison filter's or equivalent within specs, and most of the filter kits come with new o-rings.................do some home work on your specific model on here and you will be sitting back soon after, having a favorite beverage thinking that was easy

Doesn't the 1000 use a spin on filter? Don't forget to move the magnet to the new filter.
You will need to do two changes of the fluid and filter to get the full benefit of the TranSynd according to Allison requirements. I'd change the fluid/filter, drive it for a year and then do it again.

Easy to do. Small spin on filter. Do not forget to take magnet off old filter and put on new filter. My 1000 took 2.3 gallons.

I did the Allison fluid on my Chevy Duramax/Allison, it was a 1000 also. Do as noted above, it's not a bad job. I have not done the 3000 or 4000 due to the huge amount of oil I'd be dealing with...and have to get rid of.

You guys are great, thanks. My assumption is that it currently has Dexron in it; can the Transynd be mixed? Do I need to drop the pan, or is there a drain plug?

Easy to do. I think the hardest part for me was refilling the transmission with transynd through the dip stick tube. Must go slow during this procedure otherwise you make a mess. Don' t ask how I know this. 🤔 Take your time and you can do it.

Yes there is a drain plug, you do not have to drop the pan, did mine a couple of months ago, only have 3000 miles on the 1/2 dex 1/2 trnsyd mix. Going to wait until next year to do the final change.

Just like an engine oil change, be patient adding the oil through the trans dip stick tube.

Great help, guys. One more question; how much transynd will it take?

If it's not in the manual, call Allison with the trans serial number.

I measured what I drained and refilled with the same amount using a 3 1/2 gallon bucket I marked with the various levels measured in quarts. The local Advance Auto Parts shop accepted the old oil (engine and transmission) for disposal.

Here's a link to the manual.

http://www.carolinathomas.com/wp-con...ors-manual.pdf

For a refill, the manual says 10.6 quarts with standard pan and 7.4 quarts with shallow pan. I'd measure what you take out because I was supposed to use 19 quarts for my 3000, but I actually got out 20 quarts. I bought a large, clear measuring pail in the paint department Lowes. It had big numbers and was easy to read.
